The Barracks for Veterans

Donation protected
I am a retired 20 year active duty veteran who wanted to ensure that my fellow veterans in my community have a safe place to go for comradery, resources, and job training. I have created this idea for a centralized location to provide these things and more. We will have classes available to provide veterans with essential computer skills that will give them the edge they need when searching for jobs in our community. We will provide free haircuts, suits or dresses for veterans who have a job interview that may not be able to provide these items on their own. The Barracks will be a place where veterans can find comradery with fellow veterans and share their experiences without judgement. We will also have a consolidated list of all VA resources in our area. We will also have 10 beds avaialbe to any homeless or transient Veteran.
The Barracks will consist of two rooms. The first room will be a training facility with a classroom environment which will provide classes of various topics. These will include Microsoft Office, Basic Computer Skills, resume building, etc. Ten Laptops will be available to use during classroom instruction or if a Veteran just needs to research at their own pace. This room will also contain a library, computers for job searching and researching, and a lounge. An office will also be available for a VA claims team to help veterans with their disability claims and any one on one guidance they might request. The second room will be called the TOC (Tactical Operation Center). This room is the entertainment room with 4 TV’s and 4 Xboxes connected via LAN for gaming parties, 2 large TV for movie night, 4 lounge couches, and a fully functional kitchen. A children’s playroom will also be available for parents who want to visit the facility during class and not have to worry about babysitting.
We are raising money to help fund the first year of The Barracks with hopes of creating a non-profit organization to help with funding in the future. We will be utilizing our private funds to help start and hope to have help from local businesses.

This year a building was donated to house the much-needed Veteran facility in Muskogee located at the old Grace Living Center on Okmulgee. The Barracks is to be a centralized area where all Veteran resources can be readily available and to have a place where our Veterans can call their own for all their learning and recreational needs. This building was also going to have 10 beds available for any homeless Veteran in our area. Three months ago, vandals broke into the facility and robbed the copper from all the resident rooms AC, destroyed sinks, toilets, tiles. They also climbed the roof to steal the cooper from the roof units which left holes in the ceiling damaging inside ceiling tiles and carpet. We need extra funds to help restore this building, expenses we were not prepared for. All proceeds from Bikeotoberfest will go directly to help finance the expenses necessary to get The Barracks up and going.
