Theater Students to Black Panther

Donation protected

Keithley Middle School is located in Parkland, WA in the Franklin Pierce School District. As the school social worker, I try to bring relevant community events to our students who are primarily low income students of color. Given the energy around the movie Black Panther, the 6th Grade Theater teacher and I want to offer the opportunity for students to see the movie after school and discuss its messaging.

From the 6th grade theater teacher:
"I am committed to providing my students with culturally responsive curriculum. As we study acting and watch actors to learn techniques, I want to make sure that my students see actors that look like them. The movie Black Panther has a cast of strong, often young actors of color. In a time when we see a lack of diversity in Hollywood it is important to celebrate movies that not only have a diverse cast but also, tackle questions of racism and equity. Furthermore, this movie features many strong women that fight for their country and what they think is right. I want to show the young women, and the students of color in my class, that there are heroes who look like them.

In theater class, we have begun talking about diversity in media. We watched a trailer for Black Panther and students shared their thoughts on seeing female warriors and black heroes. We have also watched a video about diversity in Marvel comics and movies. This video was followed by a discussion about why it is important to have super heroes that look like you. In class, we have used the example of a need for super heroes of different races, genders, and even learning differences. Additionally, we are about to begin a project in which students will read a section of the Black Panther comic book, create a script for it, and then act out their scene.

After watching the movie, students will participate in a facilitated discussion about race and racism in life, our community, and in Hollywood. We will debrief the movie, dialogue, and plan for what they hope to see going forward. Ultimately, we will use the film as a reminder that there is a place for black actors and strong females not only in Hollywood, but in our community as well."

In order to support this learning opportunity, we are asking for financial donations to support the costs of movie tickets, popcorn, and busses. Consider donating what you can so that Keithley Middle School Theater students can see Black Panther! Thank you so much for your generosity!
