The Society for Pelvic Research

Tax deductible
Our History:
The beginnings of the Society for Pelvic Research trace back to 2006 at a clinical scientific meeting reception. Over refreshments, Dr. Matthew Fraser, PhD and Dr. Michael DiSanto, PhD discussed starting a society that would bring together and serve the needs of career basic/translational science researchers working in the different fields encompassed by the umbrella moniker of Pelvic Medicine (i.e. those who study normal and disease states of the lower urinary tract, distal gut, sexual medicine and the pelvic floor) for purposes of interaction, intellectual cross-fertilization, education and career development. These concerns are not adequately addressed by individual clinical research societies. It took until December of 2013 to take the initial idea and do something about it. An email was sent out to a handful of select like-minded colleagues and discussions and plans began. Other Board Members were selected and invited to join along the way in order to gain their expertise and a multidisciplinary balance.

The Society for Pelvic Research was born.

The Society for Pelvic Research is a North Carolina Non-Profit Corporation that filed on May 12, 2015. The company's filing status is listed as Current-Active and its File Number is 1444909. Our Mission Statement:
To promote the highest standards of basic and translational science research directed toward understanding benign pelvic visceral and musculoskeletal function and dysfunction through education, interaction, and advocacy.

Our Vision Statement:
The Society for Pelvic Research will be the premier professional organization for career basic and translational scientists interested in benign urogenital, distal gut and pelvic floor research. It will promote multidisciplinary interaction, intellectual cross-fertilization, networking for collaboration and career development through the regular dissemination of information via online resources, annual meetings and workshops, and published guidelines and standards
for basic and translational science research.

We held our inaugural annual meeting on December 5-6, 2016 in Charleston, SC. We had over 50 attendees, including PhD, MD and trainee researchers representing all of the aforementioned sub-disciplines and multiple research approaches/technologies. This meeting was widely hailed by the attendees as a huge success, and all strongly agreed that this effort should continue.

Importantly, many of our membership are non-clinicians with limited budgets, including faculty and trainees. This is especially true with the recent decreases in funding opportunities. We are also very dedicated to support trainee development, but must do so with the understanding that trainees may need to pay out of pocket in order to attend such meetings. We therefore are determined to provide affordable membership and meeting registration costs, and thus depend on charitable contributions to subsidize annual meeting and operating costs associated with running the Society.

Supporting the Society for Pelvic Research will help us to better understand normal and disease states of the pelvic region and, therefore, allow us to better develop therapies directed toward treating these disease states. Examples of such disease states include overactive and underactive bladder, urinary and fecal incontinence, erectile dysfunction, premature labor, and pelvic floor prolapse, to name a few. More fully understanding such diseases and subsequent development of new therapies directed toward their treatment is not only important for patients of all ages, but becomes increasingly important as the population ages, as many of these disease states are associated with increasing age

We are currently planning our 2nd Annual Meeting and require support in order to both provide a reasonable meeting venue, meeting supplies (meeting programs, name tags, and signage, and audio-visual, stage/microphone, poster hanging boards rentals), lodging and food and beverage services, and ongoing Societal operating costs.
