The Runaway King- Feature Film

Since the mega-success of Marvel/Disney's BLACK PANTHER movie the film industry has taken notice of audiences worldwide who wish to see images and stories that represent them on the big screen.

With the announcement of the films BLACK PANTHER 2 and YASUKE the historical samurai of African descent starring Chadwick Boseman being produced, the doorway is now open for other stories throughout the African & Black diaspora. Our goal is to bring to audiences worldwide one of the least known stories to the general public but one of the greatest legends in African diaspora history. 

Our feature film is titled THE RUNAWAY KING, based on the true legend of Zumbi dos Palmares, a Brazilian slave who declared war on the Portuguese colonial army that threatened the freedom of a fugitive community of runaway slaves.


The film will combine sweeping historical scope, romance and action depicting the Afro Brazilian martial art of capoeira. 

We are also honored to have the support of one of the most widely respected masters of the art, Mestre Cobra Mansa the president and the guiding light of the International Capoeira Angola Foundation, the largest standing Capoeira Organization in the world.



Capoeira figures prominently in The Runaway King as it was a martial art practiced by Afro Brazilian slaves and disguised as a dance to disguise their attempts to practice self defense. Rarely has it been seen in historical dramas in the way kung fu has been used in Chinese cinema.

We have heard your collective voices and are asking that those who have said that they want to see more stories that represent them on film join us in bring this story to the screen. Our initial goal is to raise $25,000 in order to cover development costs including but not limited to legal fees, marketing materials and representation at the European Film Market (EFM) and upcoming film markets.

WHO WE ARE

The organizers of this campaign to bring THE RUNAWAY KING to the screen include:

Chris Carden

Writer, photographer, videographer and former broadcast journalist Chris Carden wrote the script for THE RUNAWAY KING.

Mr. Carden began his career as a freelance photojournalist and transitioned to television news as a production assistant and writer for WPIX-NY.  He has worked as a reporter and anchor for network affiliates in Huntsville and Birmingham AL and Philadelphia, PA. He co-wrote the memoir of Alabama meteorologist Mark Prater, Silent Storm: Finding Spiritual Shelter During Hepatitis C, published in 2005. He is the writer, director and editor of the short film REDEMPTION which garnered awards at both the Bryn Mawr Silver Screen Inspiration Contest (judged in part by Oscar winning actor Sir Ben Kingsley) and at the Johnstown Film Festival in 2014 

Mr. Carden is currently the CEO of his video production company, Csquared Media, LLC.

Khalil Maasi

Actor, Producer, Stuntman & Writer Khalil Maasi began his career as a student & member of the Harlem Theater Company in Harlem, New York City. He has also studied British Acting Technique with Ruth Kulerman and Meisner Technique with Paul Lemose. Khalil is a former cast & crew member of Comedy Centrals "Chapelles Show".  Khalil can be seen as a guest star on the hit television shows “THE BLACKLIST” and “LUKE CAGE”, in the independent film thriller "P.O.E." by Openmindz Entertainment and was the lead actor in the Newark Black Film Festival award winning film “A Tight Spot”. Khalil is also a Producer on the award winning films "Bullets Over Brownsville", “Nikita”, “The Red Bowtie” the docu-series "Openmindz On The Grind" and “Jun” directed by Hong Kong action icon Robert Samuels who is the protégé of legendary Hong Kong action star, director and stuntman Sammo Hung. Khalil currently produces the Action Film & Stunt panel and events for the Newark International Film (Newarkiff) and has served as a organizing committee member as well booking talent for the festival such as Warrington Hudlin, Melvin Van Peebles, Mario Van Peebles, Vincent Pastore, Jenel Stevens & Marija Abney of Marvel/Disney Black Panthers Dora Milaje and many others. In addition to this Khalil has also been involved as a organizer for the pre screenings of the hit movies Black Panther and Creed in Newark NJ in conjunction with Michael B. Jordan, The Newark Mayor's Office Of Film & Television and Newarkiff Foundation.

Khalil is also the son of legendary martial artist Shaha Mfundishi Maasi who is the first non Asian to reach the 3rd level of the Burmese martial art of Bando. Khalil appeared with his father on ABC Wide World Of Sports “Aaron Banks World Of Martial Arts” at 7years old and has competed and medaled on the national level. Khalil has studied various styles of martial arts including Bando/Lethway, Muay Thai, Boxing, Wrestling & Submission Grappling, Capoeira and various aspects of Chinese martial arts. Khalil has also worked with Robert Samuels and the legendary James Lew on screen combat and stunts. 

Along with these activities Khalil is also a certified assault prevention counselor and facilitator with the international non profit organization ICAP (icap.org) hosting workshops on child abduction prevention, sexual assault prevention, bully prevention and human trafficking prevention.
