It's high noon in Victoria, B.C.
The clock tower above city hall still rings faithfully every hour.  But what about the people inside the building--do they deserve our trust and faith? Or is there a democracy deficit in our town?
The election is just weeks away on October 20, but the incumbent council faces little public scrutiny from new candidates, the citizenry, or even the media, thanks to the collapse of professional journalism and general distraction and apathy.
Enter The Record,  a website that debuts this month with the goal of disclosing the voting record of Mayor Helps and the eight incumbent councillors on key issues. Edited by journalist Sid Tafler, The Record will also cover the election, offer analysis and explain what happened once it's all over (that's as far as we're planning--a short, but focussed burst of civic coverage).
Love or loathe the current council, we hope you agree that democracy depends upon full disclosure and public input. That's where YOU come in. We desperately want your ideas, thoughts, feedback, and yes, financial support.
We've set a modest goal of $3,000 to build and operate the website, pay writers and photographers, and install listening devices at City Hall (don't worry, our devices are people). Not a bad deal for helping safeguard the future of democracy in our city!

Donate by credit or debit card, privately or in public, your choice. Even the smallest contribution will make a difference.

NOTE: To contact the Editor, just  click the envelope symbol next to the name Sid Tafler to the right of the clock tower.

We're 89% of the way there--so close, we can see the finish line.
We have more than 60 donors, which indicates strong support for the kind of independent journalism we strive to bring to these pages.
The Record has published the voting record of city council members on key development issues, a poll of the mayoral race and a variety of articles on important civic issues in Victoria.
There's much more to come in the weeks ahead.

Excitement is building in the newsroom of The Record as we prepare for our launch. In a week or so, we will go live with the voting record and analysis of all members of Victoria city council on key issues. Some of these may surprise or confound you, all of them will interest you if you care about civic government in Victoria.
Our major focus at the outset will be the record of the current council, but rest assured we will also probe the platforms and political fitness of the challengers, both for the mayoralty and councillor positions. We will also delve into other issues, such as the removal of the statue of Sir John A. Macdonald, development in your neighbourhood, the missing managers at city hall.
Meanwhile, a tip for our readers (The Record Family): a major announcement on the election is expected soon--a new candidate for mayor.
Can you smell the midnight oil? Our team is labouring day and night to create a website (we call it a news web) we hope you'll find attractive and easy to navigate, at its own dedicated web address.
We would like you to be part of that team. What would you like The Record to do, what stories to follow? Your story ideas, tips, critiques and advice are always welcome. Please contact me by clicking the envelope symbol next to my name at the top of this page.
Most importantly, great thanks to our donors, your generosity and encouragement are invaluable. We have not yet reached our funding goal, but we are hopeful we will, once we produce results, starting next week and continuing until after the October 20 election. Equal thanks are due to our small team of crack researchers, editorial advisors and our creative web designer.
One more request: please spread our message via email and social media. We know there are thousands of people who would be interested in what we do, they just haven't heard of us yet.
Note, our photo: The hands of Sir John A--did they do more good than evil? A week ago, who would have thought his statue would become an election issue?
