Maybe you have heard, but there has been a big transition within The Nurturing Nest. In May, we (Laurie Skiles, Ashley Hogan and Sarah Geo Walton) took over ownership! Over the next several months, you'll be hearing a lot from us as we introduce ourselves, showcase our associates and spotlight the needs The Nurturing Nest meets in our community.
It is so much more than a workplace for all of us.
“The Nurturing Nest is a place of support and opportunities. It brings parents in all parts of their childbearing journey together, relieving fears and worries, normalizing our experiences and making true, possibly forever, connections. It is a place for community, information, wellness and support. It is a place to call home; to call crying and to call in celebration. It is also a place to hang out with my friends and actually feel like a seen and heard adult.” -Sarah
The three of us were already a part of The Nurturing Nest community; Laurie and Ashley work in the boutique and Sarah rents an office. We had built a little village. We were all stunned when Rachel (previous owner) told us she was moving to Austin.
“I had been the manager of The Nurturing Nest for about 4 years when Rachel informed me she was selling The Nurturing Nest. I was instantly filled with fear! Who would buy The Nest? Would it continue to be the same community it had been or would it significantly change? I had poured my heart and soul into this business.” -Laurie
When the offer to buy The Nurturing Nest came up, we didn't think it was even a realistic possibility. We discussed partnership anyway and quickly knew we were the right people to take the reins. The three of us have unique strengths, experiences and ideas. With so many areas to focus on within The Nurturing Nest, we knew it will benefit having multiple people to tend to the soil.
There was just one problem. Money. None of us had enough in the bank for a down payment and our personal assets were severely limited. The Nurturing Nest hadn’t been doing anymore than breaking even and it was difficult to find a loan based on our love for it alone. But where there is a will, there is a way. We scrapped the bottom of every barrel to come up with enough collateral to cover the bare minimum.

“We literally spent every last penny and even signed over our cars to purchase the business. It took nearly 6 months to get all of the loan paperwork processed.” - Laurie
On May 1, 2018 we officially became the new owners of The Nurturing Nest. Even though multiple financial advisors warned against buying the business, we believe so strongly in its mission and the importance of a resource like it for our community. We could not let it slip away.
“Our community is made up of all of us, and this is our place to be heard and supported and share knowledge during this phase of life. Building humans is hard, raising them is hard, finding a place to learn and connect with other parents should not be.” - Ashley
We truly believe The Nurturing Nest will survive, but we would love to see it thrive along with you. We look forward to growing and nurturing our community here within our doors and as a broader community in Northern Nevada. There is no shortage of ideas on what we can do to offer more, to reach further and to have a greater impact. We are really starting to focus in on what to do first and how to make it happen.

We strive to offer quality products for parents and babies, fitness classes, workshops and education along with free support, information and community building groups and circles that can not be found elsewhere in the Reno area.
It is very important to us and the families in our community that support be accessible. In order to keep offering our circles/support groups for free, we ask that you please shop in our boutique, take our classes, tell your friends about us and donate funds when you are able!
We are able to give so much to our community due to people just like you spreading the word, volunteering their time and donating.
