ABOUT THE COMPANY:

Dzul Dance fuses multiple dance forms with aerial circus arts and contortion as a means to communicate indigenous pre-Hispanic, Mexican and Latin culture to create bridges between contemporary art and historical heritage. By transforming bodies into earthbound and airborne forces of nature Dzul breaks physical, cultural and political boundaries. This daring and unique company connects the ancient and the modern in order to illuminate the vast array of drama and beauty inherent to the natural world and the human condition

Dzul Dance was created in 2003. Artistic Director Javier Dzul, described as "mythical" by CityArts, and his culturally diverse company of 10 performers have been presented throughout the world garnering reviews  along the way that hail Dzul’s “acrobatic wizardry” (Attitude: The Dancer’s Magazine) and "spellbinding" (The Scotsman) choreography.

Dzul Dance's intense physicality and creative appeal have won them invitations to perform at prestigious venues and festivals in over ten countries. Some highlights include United Nations, Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, Edinburgh Fringe Festival (Scotland), Festival Cervantino  (Mexico), Reichold Center for the Arts (USVI), Banff Arts Centre (Canada) and Festival Centro Historico (Mexico).

Our Company has been featured by National Public Radio, American Latino, Univision's Despierta America, NY1, Bloomberg TV and in photographer Acey Harper's Private Acts: the acrobat sublime published by Rizolli in 2009.

Dzul has created performances for a number of corporations and production groups that include: Columbia Pictures Spider-Man 2: London Calling, Bloomberg, El Financiero, Latin Grammy Week (NYC), Canadian International Bank (Canada), Conde Nast, Mexico Tourism Board (NYC), Pineda Covalin (Mexico), Wild Bird Fund (NYC), Whirl Inc. (Canada), Em Polham (Korea), NYC Big Events, American Indian Community House, Government of the State of Campeche, Instituto de Cultura de Campeche, Xcaret  (Mexico). United States - Mexico Chamber of Commerce, Instituto de Turismo y Arte de Mazatlan (Mexico), Adelante: JP Morgan's Latino/Hispanic employee network, Latino Coalition Network of Deloitte, UBS and Bank of America.

ABOUT THE SHOW:

The Last Mayan King - Media Kit (click here)

The Last Mayan King is an autobiographical, physical narrative that explores pre-Hispanic Mexican and Mayan culture through the eyes of Artistic Director, Javier Dzul - the last reigning Mayan King of a remote tribe in the Yucatán. Utilizing elements of dance, physical theatre, contortion and various circus apparatuses, The Last Mayan King quite literally manipulates space vertically, horizontally and everywhere in between in an attempt to carve out the stories of one of history’s most revered and mysterious indigenous civilizations.

Time and space are widely abstracted in the work as the past and future dynamically bounce off of each other, both literally and symbolically, creating a realm in which ancestral spirits, the performers and the audience may converge in one shared present. The performers in the work take on the roles of various interchangeable characters to portray and communicate the experience of living in and practicing Mayan tradition. Excavating the practices of Mayan ritual dancers, the performers showcase the fantastic magic and trance required of one to enter and navigate through Xibalba, the Mayan underworld or world of the dead. It is on this journey through this contorted time-space vortex where one recognizes and remembers that the essence of life resides between the fragile and frequent cycles of earthly existence.

Serving as a visual memoir, The Last Mayan King introduces the real-life experiences Javier encountered whilst assimilating to modernized society. The reflection of these experiences in the work highlights the inherent trials and tribulations of being faced with a new, colonizationinduced world that creates a challenging dichotomy of two very opposing concepts of life and culture. The work also serves as a pathway by which to acknowledge how Mayan heritage helped shape Javier’s understanding of life, art, magic, tradition, honor, relationships, love and his position in the universe.

The Last Mayan King visually and physically transforms a performance space, inviting the audience to be transported into the story and its exploration of the archetypal universality of the human condition. As such, there is access for an individual from any cultural background or identity to connect a part of themselves to the life of the Mayan King - especially Javier’s journey - and potentially find awe-inspiring moments of this multifaceted, physical fantasia.

The Last Mayan King is in service of paying homage to, honoring and holding space for indigenous and ancestral history, as this is the foundation upon which we’ve built who we are today. It has been known in Mayan teachings that their prophecies and insights foreshadow what may be to come. With that in mind, The Last Mayan King offers us a chance to beget rediscovery of our most primal, basic and necessary principals of living life by reintroducing cognizance that we, as one human race, come from common roots, are able to identify where we are presently, and can perhaps take a moment to consider what we want collectively for the future.

Dzul Dance Mexico Partnerships:

The Campeche Youth Initiative was a project of Dzul Dance in collaboration with the Government of the State of Campeche, Mexican Cultural institute of New York and the Campeche Tourism Board. These organizations are committed to providing youth with opportunities to experience artistic creation, the creative process and performance in order to enhance their individual development and stimulate their artistic potential. This program has enabled young dancers from Mexico to travel, perform and study in New York and has created opportunities for them as professional dancers in Mexico.

In October 2008 the Campeche Youth Initiative project was accepted to be part of the Performing the World Conference in NYC, an event that brings together artists, activists, community organizers, researchers, youth workers, psychologists and educators from 27 different countries. The annual conference is sponsored by the All Stars Project and the Eastside Institute for Psychotherapy. The conference offers numerous performances, lectures, films, workshops and networking opportunities. Thirteen young adults from Campeche traveled to New York City to perform alongside Dzul Dancers for two weeks. None had traveled outside of Mexico before.
Campeche Youth Initiative at Performing the World

Because of the success of the Campeche Youth Initiative Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (CONACULTA) of Mexico and the Government of Campeche awarded Javier Dzul full funding to create La Compania de Danza Contemporanea del Estado de Campeche. The dance and aerial company has been performing and touring in festivals throughout Mexico since Javier founded the company in 2009. Since 2009 Dzul Dance and other sponsors have secured funding and visas for members of La Compania de Danza to study with and perform with Dzul Dance for two months in NYC every year.
