Juan is a 13-year-old boy from Greece, NY who has a fatal form of Mitochondrial Disease called Leigh's Syndrome (LS). LS is a rare, neurodegenerative condition that affects about 1 in 40,000 - 50,000 children at birth. Symptoms include but are not limited to loss of motor skills, vomiting, and seizures.
Supportive care for LS is rare in the United States and finding a doctor who specializes in this disease is extremely difficult.
Juan's family recently located a specialist in Philadelphia, PA. Studies show that with the correct treatment, symptoms, especially seizure activity have been reduced in number and length. This will most certainly help Juan live a more comfortable life.
In order to obtain this treatment Juan’s family will need to travel to and from Philadelphia regularly resulting in enormous financial stress for the family of 6. It is my hope that we can alleviate some financial burden and assist his family in obtaining the appropriate treatment for Juan.
Please consider donating to this cause; any contribution will be greatly appreciated!
