The Irish Banshee
Irish folklore tells the tale of the wailing Banshees that keen throughout the night to forewarn those of an impending death in the family. The Banshee is not one that brings death or causes death, rather it warns of an impending death so that loved ones are able to prepare for the inevitable.
The appearance of the Banshee has many different interpretations; from a beautiful woman with long white hair dressed in all white, to a terrifying old hag dressed in all black with long sharp nails and sharp teeth. Both succeed at being just as terrifying with the omen of death they bring along with them.
It is said that if one were to find a silver comb on the ground and pick it up, it would bring extremely bad luck to that person. Banshees are believed to place the silver comb to lure in gullible human beings to their ruin...
OUR STORY
"The Banshee" follows the story of a strong, yet over-worked mother, Stephanie O'Neill, who ends up having to carry the weight of the family after her husband, Billy, loses his job at the most inopportune time. Not only must she hold herself together amongst the stress of supporting her family of four, she also puts it on herself to suppress the deep emotions of recent and unexpected loss.
While Stephanie is being numbed by her responsibilities, her high school daughter, Aideen, receives unwelcome visits from a rather familiar apparition...
OUR MESSAGE
In today's world, it seems that many have some sort of mental condition or emotional issue that goes overlooked and is rarely discussed. Not everyone wants to admit that they are depressed, struggling with anxiety, or worse, using drugs as a way to cope with these issues.
"The Banshee," incorporates all of the above with the Irish folklore of the omen of death in order to see deeper into the crumbling state of a mother desperately fighting to stay strong for the sake of her family. Which, ironically, ends up being her major flaw. Instead of taking the olive branch offered by loved ones and friends to pull her out of this downward spiral, she shuts out the world and convinces herself she is "doing just fine."
Depression due to overwhelming grief is something that many can relate to, but not many looking from the outside in can fully understand. This story sheds light on that issue and takes you inside the mind of someone who is going through, in a manner of speaking, a personal hell, and strives to convey to the audience some of the telltale signs of mental strife. No one really knows what is going on "behind closed doors," but there are certain behaviors that can hint that there is something much deeper at play.
Our main goal with this short film is to help our audience understand and take note of these issues that can lie very close beneath the surface. If, after seeing the film, you have someone in your life that may be exhibiting some of these behaviors, it is our hope that an effort is made to get them to open up before it becomes too late.
USE OF FUNDING
We are seeking a total of $5000 to get this project moving and completed. We have a loose production schedule to get our film shot over a weekend toward the end of September/early October in order to have a release date right around Halloween.
The funds will go toward the following production costs:
- makeup and costumes: we want to represent the Banshee in the best possible way in order to better serve our story
- camera and grip/electric: although we will mainly use natural lighting/horror film lighting, a portion of the budget is set aside for this
- post-production editing and sound: the sound can make or break a film, separating the amateur from the professional, and the editing will give the horrifying edge to the story
- locations and transportation
Anything and everything will help us to achieve our goal. The sooner we can confirm and finalize a budget, the better! This funding page will remain open until after October 31st, 2018.

Technology has made us very much more connected through screens, but much less connected through human contact. There is a coldness with human connection that can be found at the root of many of these mental conditions.
This is a very important message to us. We have all personally, or have had loved ones who have had the misfortune of dealing with the problems presented in this film. We want to be able to have this film seen by as many eyes as possible to help prevent further harm done due to these conditions.
