Tim's Story:
Our friend, Tim Held, has suffered significant health issues dating back to December 2007. It began with a diverticulitis diagnosis, two colon resections, and a perforation that lead to a bowel obstruction. During a seven month recovery period, Tim began to feel excessively fatigued and dehydrated. Blood tests would reveal Type 2 Diabetes. After a lengthy recuperation, Tim returned to his maintenance position at the City of Sartell. While replacing a sheet of tempered glass at the area outdoor ice rink, he fell and sustained a traumatic brain injury. His injury resulted in subsequent hospitalizations after a series of seizures, migraines and vision issues; ultimately rendering him medically disabled. As he struggled again to recover, more health obstacles continued to overwhelm is daily life and the life of his wife Leah and three children; Thomas (9), Ryan (7) and Sophie (6). During his rehabilitation, Tim’s diabetes became increasingly difficult to manage. The on-going repercussions of his brain injury, diabetes and becoming a full-time caregiver to three young children while Leah worked over-nights as a Stearns County Dispatcher to provide for the family became extremely difficult. As a result of Tim’s diabetes, he developed a serious staph infection that spread to the bone after wounding his right foot. During the last year and a half, Tim has been hospitalized on dozens of occasions for infections and underwent eleven partial amputations of the foot. The doctors finally determined the only way to keep the infection at bay and to save his life would be to amputate his right leg, below the knee, on Saturday, January 14th. The last few years have devastated this beautiful family financially. The loss of Tim’s income and looming medical bills have made it impossible to keep the mortgage paid. Leah has almost exhausted her PTO and will be forced to use the Family Medical Leave Act to care for Tim and the children. To add to their financial pressures, they will be faced with the cost of a
prosthetic and on-going medical expenses.
