The Hayley Margaret Maher academic prize fund

Hi everyone! Among the many ways that we're remembering Hayley, an undergraduate academic prize is being established in her name at Monash University in Melbourne, where Hayley herself studied. The scope of the prize reflects Hayley's academic interests, and will serve to encourage and reward excellent scholarship for years to come. The award winner will receive their prize at an awards event, and be able to note the accolade on their CV for the purposes of seeking scholarships for further study, or to help advance their career outside academia. Thanks indeed to those at Monash, including Hayley's former supervisor, Kevin Foster, for helping to make this happen. Following some guidance from the Monash fundraising team, I'm setting the initial target at $AUD 5,000 (about £2,700), so that a prize of some $AUD 200 can be drawn each year, as appropriate, into the future. If we exceed this, all the better! - more students will stand to benefit.

The Hayley Margaret Maher Prize for the best honours thesis on themes of material culture or class
Established in 2019, the Hayley Margaret Maher Prize honours the remarkable life and academic interests of its namesake. It is awarded each year to the Monash honours-year student whose thesis best explores the related themes of material culture or class, and is intended to encourage the pursuit of further study in these areas.
Hayley Margaret Maher (1983-2018) took a double degree in Arts & Music at Monash University before continuing on to her honours year in English Literature, under the supervision of Associate Professor Kevin Foster. Her highly commended dissertation examined the significance of rituals of tea drinking in English literature through time and was titled ‘Reading the Leaves: Tea, Class and Culture in Selected English Writing, 1814 to 1958’. Hayley also co-edited the student newspaper, 'Lot’s Wife', during her time at Monash, before moving to London and working as an editor for Penguin Books and Thames & Hudson. In her spare time, Hayley studied for a Master’s in Modern and Contemporary Literature at Birkbeck, University of London, and also enjoyed gardening, visiting art galleries, sewing, attending gigs, exploring the British Isles (and beyond), and keeping in touch with her home city of Melbourne.
The Hayley Margaret Maher Prize is funded by an endowment from her loving friends and family. Hayley’s husband, Simon – also a Monash graduate – pursues a career as an historian at King’s College London, and would be delighted to receive correspondence from award winners, and to offer any academic and wider careers advice as desired.
