My brother Ronald Shankar who lives in Fiji was diagnosed with end stage renal disease at the age of 37. One year on from diagnosis, my brother is now going through dialysis and suffering from numerous infections due to the poor condition of medical treatment available in Fiji.
I have made the major decision to donate one of my kidneys to my brother in order to give him a chance of survival. With a kidney donation my brother will have a better quality of life with his wife and 9 year old son.
Fiji does not have an adequate medical health system to perform renal transplant surgery, and since Ronald is not eligible for Medicare, we have decided to choose to have the procedure performed in India due to the prohibitive costs involved were it to be performed in Australia or the USA. The total cost of the transplant process is approximately USD$20,000 (approximately AUD$30,000) which will still place a significant financial strain on our families. The surgery is scheduled to be performed towards the end of August this year, and I am now hoping to raise some funds to assist us to pay for the transplant. These costs are only for the medical procedure, and do not include a number of costs including accommodation, flights, loss of earning etc.
I'm kindly asking you all to please help me raise funds by the end of August so that we can meet the costs of the transplant and give Ronald a second chance at life, for his family to have their husband and father, and for me to have my brother. Thank you all xo
