Hello! My name is Nicole, I'm an aspiring librarian living in Houston, Texas. If you follow me on social media, you're probably aware that I'm seeking a Bachelor's degree in English, but I've been out of school for some time.
This is largely due to mental health reasons and financial stresses caused by predatory loan companies and underemployment.
To make a long story short, in Spring 2017, I got very sick, both physically and mentally. I tried to do the best thing for my health and my grades by applying for a Medical Withdrawal from the semester, but I wasn't sure if the loan company would still cover my costs for the semester. I called the company and spoke to a representative, who said that yes, they would honor my loan in the event of a medical withdrawal. This wasn't true. When I withdrew from the semester, they withrdrew the loan and left me with a $2,700 bill. I had no way to pay it back, no assistance from my parents or family, and no job prospects to help me make additional income. Besides that, at the time I was in no way healthy enough to continue school.
Recently, almost 2 years later, I'm finally in a position where I am healthy and whole enough to finish my education! This is where you can help me! Additional fees and surcharges have been added to my original $2,700 balance and ballooned that amount to over $5,000! I've paid off over $1,000 on my own, but it will take me another year or more to pay off the remaining amount!
Without paying off my remaining balance, I can't speak to an advisor, I can't enroll in classes, I can't even view my degree plan online. I cannot take any steps to continue my education until this amount is paid off.
I need your help to make this final push to get my degree so that I can thrive and succeed. Please, if you have the money to spare, help me out! And if you don't, please share my story.
