Hello. My name is Grian Cutanda. I am a Spanish author, psychologist, communicator, environmental activist, translator and researcher in Education Sciences.
In 2016, I completed a research at the University of Granada that is having a significant international impact. I showed that the most direct way to build a civilisation respectful of the Earth passes through a transformation of the collective worldview of humanity. I also showed that this can be achieved by using certain traditional stories carefully selected for this purpose. As you can see in the attached video, this idea has been developed to create two important global projects.
One of them is The Earth Stories Collection, a global bank of myths, legends and folktales from around the world capable of transmit a systemic and ecocentric worldview. It is here where we need your help:
1. for the creation of a website with a very large database and
2. for the publication of a book –in English and Spanish for now– where the reasons for the project will be justified and the first instalment of stories from the Collection will be offered.
However, a huge project like TESC could not be carried out by myself alone. I have the invaluable help of my colleagues in The Avalon Project – Initiative for a Culture of Peace , an educational and activist, non-profit NGO, located in Spain. It is the entity that hosts The Earth Stories Collection.
A ROYALTY-FREE CULTURAL HERITAGE
The Earth Stories Collection (TESC) aims to become a multicultural legacy of humanity to which every human being can freely access in search of educational and cultural resources for the construction of a new society.
For this, the vast majority of the stories will be offered free of charge (usually, under a Creative Commons license CC BY-NC-SA) for its use and dissemination without rights impediments.
But anticipating a possible global crisis, TESC cannot remain just in a cultural repository under a digital format, which could be compromised by the mere lack of electricity supply. The Collection must also be safeguarded in paper format and in all possible languages. Hence the need to publish TESC through successive printed volumes; in this case, Volume 0.
However, the condition and requisite expressed to potential publishing houses that our stories –unlike the essay section– should be free of rights meant that no publishing house were willing to accept the publishing of this Volume 0 of TESC. This has led us to choose self-publishing, that is, it is the Collection’s own entity (The Avalon Project) which will publish the book. This will be made at launching only in two languages: English and Spanish.
WHAT WE NEED AND WHAT IT COSTS
So, we start here a crowdfunding campaign in order to cover the expenses of three proposals:
1. The design and creation of TESC website
* This website will have several ways to access the stories: in alphabetical order; by the sections and principles of the Earth Charter illustrated by the stories; by nations, cultures and traditions; and by themes. On the other hand, the stories will be offered in HTML format, but can also be downloaded in pdf.
* Prior estimate: 1,474€
2. The layout and printing of The Earth Stories Collection; that is, the Volume 0 of the Collection in English
* Product dimensions: 6.30 x 9.25 inches (16,00 x 23,50 cm). Paperback, around 450 pages. Fifteen pages illustrated in colour. Cover, spine and back cover in full colour.
* A first print of 50 copies will be made, printing later on demand.
* Prior estimate: 663€
3. The layout and printing of La Colección de Historias de la Tierra; that is, the Volume 0 of the Collection in Spanish, with the same characteristics as in English
So, the total estimate is: Website (1,474€) + Book in English (663€) + Book in Spanish (663€) = 2,800€ + unforeseen expenses (200€) = 3,000€
WHERE WILL THE MONEY RAISED BY SELLING BOOKS GO?
All income from books, except 10%, will go to the funds of The Earth Stories Collection (being The Avalon Project the legal body that manages it). This money will be used in expenses in the management of The Earth Stories Collection and the publishing of the next instalment of stories (Volume 1). It could also be used in the publishing of Volume 0 of TESC in other languages (nowadays, we are assessing the translation into Arabic and Russian during 2020).
The remaining 10% would correspond to my royalties by authorship, which is the same percentage assigned to me as an author for the royalties of my books already published in the publishing house where I have published the most of my books. BUT the proportion of the text corresponding to traditional stories will be subtracted from that 10%. That percentage will be delivered to the Earth Charter Initiative funds, at the United Nations’ University for Peace, in Costa Rica, as agreed with the Secretariat of Earth Charter International.
Although the most of the adaptations of the stories have been written by myself, I have chosen to give up all rights over these stories by placing them under a Creative Commons license and by reserving their corresponding share in authorship royalties to the Earth Charter.
WHY COLLABORATE WITH THIS PROJECT?
Because rarely will you be offered the opportunity to participate in something truly historical.
As explained in the video, the objective of TESC (and that of its sister project, The Global Storytelling Lab, the planetary network of activist storytellers) is to transform the worldview of our civilisation in the shortest possible time, in the face of the very serious environmental crisis we are living. For this reason, your contribution may have an unusual significance, by lending your support to a historic effort to prevent the collapse of our civilisation or, failing that, to reconstruct human civilisation, this time in harmony with Earth.

Es aquí donde necesitamos tu ayuda, para la creación de una página web con una amplísima base de datos y la publicación de un libro, en inglés y castellano, donde se justifiquen las razones del proyecto y se ofrezca la primera entrega de historias de la Colección.
Sin embargo, todo este proyecto no podría llevarlo a cabo yo solo. En él me acompañan mis compañeros y compañeras del Proyecto Avalon - Iniciativa para una Cultura de Paz , una ONG educativa y activista, no lucrativa, con sede en España, y que es la entidad que acoge la Colección.
UN LEGADO CULTURAL LIBRE DE DERECHOS
The Earth Stories Collection (TESC) pretende convertirse en un legado multicultural de la humanidad al que todo ser humano pueda acceder libremente en busca de recursos educativos y culturales para la construcción de una nueva sociedad.
Para ello, la inmensa mayoría de las historias se ofrecerán a través de nuestra website con carácter gratuito (normalmente, bajo licencia Creative Commons CC BY-NC-SA) para su uso y difusión sin impedimentos de derechos.
Pero, en previsión de una crisis global, TESC no puede quedarse sólo en un repositorio cultural en formato digital, que podría verse comprometido por la mera carencia de suministro eléctrico. La Colección debe salvaguardarse también en formato de papel y en todos los idiomas posibles. De ahí la necesidad de publicar la Colección a través de sucesivos volúmenes impresos; en este caso, el Volumen 0.
Sin embargo, la condición expresada a las posibles editoriales de que las historias debían quedar libres de derechos hizo que ninguna editorial de las consultadas estuviera dispuesta a asumir la publicación de este Volumen 0 de TESC. Eso nos ha hecho optar por la autopublicación del libro desde la propia Colección, con dos ediciones en principio, una en inglés y otra en castellano.
LO QUE NECESITAMOS Y LO QUE CUESTA
Así pues, iniciamos aquí una campaña de crowdfunding para poder cubrir los gastos de tres propuestas:
1. El diseño y creación de la página web de TESC
* Esta website va a contar con diversas vías para acceder a las historias: por orden alfabético, por las secciones y principios de la Carta de la Tierra que ilustran las historias, por naciones, culturas y tradiciones de procedencia, y por temas. Por otra parte, las historias se ofrecerán en formato html, pero también se podrán descargar en pdf.
* Precio presupuestado: 1.474€
2. La maquetación y la publicación del Volumen 0 del libro The Earth Stories Collection, en inglés
* Las medidas del libro van a ser 16,00 x 23,50 cm, con un total de en torno a 450 páginas, con 15 páginas ilustradas en color. Cubierta, lomo y contracubierta a todo color, en rústica.
* Se hará una primera impresión de 50 ejemplares, publicando posteriormente bajo demanda
* Precio presupuestado: 663€
3. La maquetación y la publicación del mismo libro en castellano, con las mismas características que en inglés.
Así pues, el total estimado es: Website (1.474€) + Libro en inglés (663€) + Libro en castellano (663€) = 2.800€ + gastos imprevistos (200€) = 3.000€
ADÓNDE IRÁ EL DINERO RECAUDADO CON LA VENTA DEL LIBRO
Todos los ingresos por el libro, salvo un 10%, irán a los fondos de The Earth Stories Collection (siendo el órgano legal que lo gestiona The Avalon Project). Este dinero se empleará en gastos en la gestión de The Earth Stories Collection y en la publicación de la próxima entrega de relatos (Volumen 1). También podría emplearse en la edición del Volumen 0 de la Colección en otros idiomas (se está valorando la traducción al árabe y al ruso durante el próximo año).
El 10% restante correspondería a mis royalties por autoría, que es el mismo porcentaje que se me asigna como escritor por los royalties de mis libros ya publicados. A ese 10% se le restará la proporción de texto correspondiente a las historias tradicionales. Ese porcentaje se entregará a los fondos de la Iniciativa Carta de la Tierra, en la Universidad para la Paz de las Naciones Unidas en Costa Rica, tal como se ha acordado con la secretaría de Carta de la Tierra Internacional.
Aunque la mayoría de las adaptaciones de las historias las he escrito yo mismo, he optado por renunciar a todo derecho sobre esos relatos situándolos bajo licencia Creative Commons y al reservar su parte correspondiente en royalties a Carta de la Tierra.
POR QUÉ COLABORAR CON ESTE PROYECTO
Porque pocas veces se te va a ofrecer una oportunidad histórica de poner tu granito de arena.
Como se ha explicado en el vídeo, el objetivo de TESC (y el de su proyecto hermano, The Global Storytelling Lab, la red global de storytellers activistas) es transformar la visión del mundo de nuestra civilización en el menor tiempo posible, ante la gravísima crisis ambiental que vivimos.
