The Denson Family's House Is Gone

Donation protected
First: GRATITUDE! My entire extended family and our neighbors and friends in the Malibu all have our lives!  But as quickly as many of our properties were consumed on Friday, November 9 by the Wolsey Fire as it raced over the mountains and up the coast, our lives transitioned in just moments, too.

Our long-time, multigenerational family home is in ashes today, burnt to the ground a couple of nights ago.  We're suddenly homeless.  And as self sufficient we are typically, we have to admit, we're in a real bind. This is a hard ask for me, so please bear with me.

First, a digression - we're not the Malibu people you hear about on the celebrity news. When my grandpa and his friends built our house in the late 40s, they did all of the construction. One and a half acre lots in our Point Dume neighborhood then went for $3100.  Our family are all a bunch of forever do-it- yourselfers. We grow a lot of our own food on our property, too.  When we fix up or repair or rebuild, we pay as we go.  Some of our newer neighbors refer to us and other longtime Malibu residents as "Malibillies." They're good people.  We have names for some of them, too, and we all get along and help each other when needed.

Last year, after my dad died suddenly, my 70 year old mom, Colleen, was left to take on all of the things he did for their entire lives. Including the maintenance and bills of their over 60 year old home in Malibu where she grew up and where I also grew up. My wife, Corinne, then pregnant, with our first son Jace, now 4, and I had just lost our long-time rental. Mom needed help.   We moved in and I took on the bills and started rebuilding the house.

It was in rough shape. Most of the downstairs was uninhabitable due to mold growth.  I went to work on it immediately.

On Thursday, November 8, Corinne brushed on the last paint stroke on the walls of our baby son, Behr's room.  I made final adjustments to the kitchen counters that I had just finished remodeling.  My mom Colleen, Corinne and I toasted our good work, and then we all had a great night's rest.

The next day, we woke up to gale-force winds and threatening clouds of smoke as the Wolsey Fire barreled up the coast towards our neighborhood. After evacuating  my brother-in-law, we both  managed to help keep the fires away from several properties in the neighborhood putting out multiple spot fires.  When the embers started to fall around our old house on Wandermere, we fought hard to save it but we had to concede to nature.  It got the place, but not our memories.

That night after accepting defeat we managed to put out spot fires for our families and other strangers that will never know we saved their homes.

Our Home Now...

I am a freelance FAA certified drone pilot who is continually building his business (www.dronetechaerial.com ).  We have shows on Netflix, feature film credits, do commercials and even some real estate from time to time. You believe in people helping themselves? Me too, you live in this town you know people in the biz. Help me spread the word and make some introductions. We are unparalleled in our industry and no one makes the switch after working with us. Corinne is a part time personal trainer and a full timer with the kids. My mother's retired and living on social security.  As is true with all of us, bills never stop (and for us, neither do trips to the store for diapers!)   Whatever you can do to help us -  THANK YOU! Please help us get started on rebuilding our lives, our home and our neighborhood..

With love from all of us,

Jaron, Corinne, Jace & Behr Denson,  and Colleen Denson
