The Break, The Wake, The Hold, The Breath
Donation protected
As most of you will know, I am in my final year of graduate (MFA) studies in the Criticism and Curatorial Practice program at OCAD University. My thesis exhibition The Break, The Wake, The Hold, The Breath, features the work of artists Jamilah Malika Abu-Bakare and Abraham Oghobase.
The Break, The Wake, The Hold, The Breath explores the effects of colonization expressed as tension or fugitivity carried in the Black body. Through photography, video and sound installations Abu-Bakare and Oghobase use this tension to present acts of refusal and agency, inseparable from one another.
I have generously been offered an opportunity, as guest curator, to present this work at Circuit Gallery at Prefix ICA this April, 2019. Even though I would receive funding and in-kind support from Circuit Gallery and OCAD University the cost of mounting a professional exhibition of this nature will cost more, and as a graduate student I am ineligible to apply for government arts grants.
I am looking to you -- my friends, family and community -- to donate what you can to help make this happen. This campaign is to raise funds for gear rental, some installation and promotional costs, catalogue publication, and event programming.
Your help would be greatly appreciated. To thank you for your contributions, your name will be credited alongside the curatorial statement in the exhibition. This fundraising campaign will run until March 15, 2019. If you can help in other ways please contact me at: [email redacted]
The sincerest of THANKYOUS to everyone that can contribute. This is a labour of love that I look forward to sharing with all of you.
Cheers,
Liz Ikiriko
