The Barn School

What would you do if you were a single parent of a special needs boy who was denied access into day homes as well as various programs because he was too high a risk due to his medical conditions? What if after exhausting all avenues the only options were private care and/or home schooling? How would you feel and what would you do?

This is exactly what I am facing with Ethan, my 6-year-old son.  Ethan has ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) as well as a very rare food allergy called F-PIES (Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome). F-PIES is a rare disease and does not currently qualify for any funding or  extra support.  It cannot be treated with an EpiPen and it is a serious life-threatening disease.

Ethan was born in 2011.  He has been very ill with F-PIES since birth, but it took years before doctors were able to diagnose him. F-PIES reactions caused damage to his lungs and left him in pain on almost a daily basis. He was non-verbal, could not sleep and would have severe melt downs. He was then also diagnosed with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) in 2013.

Ethan is incredibly smart, intuitive, compassionate, has a deep caring heart for others, a love for the natural world and a genuine curiosity about other people and the world around him.

Nature is a place where Ethan finds comfort.  In my research to understand and help him, I had read study after study about the healing benefits of nature and horses.  In 2013, I completed my training in FEEL (Facilitated Equine Experiential Learning)® and started working more with the horses to help Ethan. I was amazed at how the horses intuitively knew what to do to support him. Through the FEEL work, Ethan learned about emotions.  His melt downs decreased and his self regulation improved. Throughout the journey, I learned of innovative ways to help his sensory system, calm anxiety, increase focus as well as improve self esteem. I developed a special sensory exercise on the horse that helps to balance children. I have shared what I have discovered with other families and their children have responded in remarkable ways.

I am passionate about making a difference not only for my son, but also for other children who thrive in a natural setting with the healing power of the horses.

The Barn School will provide the opportunity for all children including ASD, Sensory Processing, Anxiety, ADHD, F-PIES, as well as other medical conditions to explore the natural world well connecting to the wisdom, the acceptance and healing power of horses. It will be an equine based and experiential learning program for children  and their families. The Barn School will help create community and break isolation.

This project has been a dream of mine ever since the first time my son was denied access to care as well as programs due to his medical challenges.  I felt it was so unfair that he was going to miss out on many basic life experiences and it broke my heart. Unfortunately, I know I am not alone in this as I have had many other families who have shared similar struggles and heartbreak with me.

After years of searching I have finally found a wonderful place to host the program in Saanich, BC. The timing is urgent.  We already have a waiting list of children excited for the program to start.  By securing this new place right away and bringing the horses to their wonderful new home, this dream will come true for my son and other children alike. We will also be offering toddler programs, family programs and parent sessions.

Thank you in advance for helping to make this experience available to not only my son, but also to other children with medical conditions so that they have can thrive.
