Program Funding for Equine Costs

Donation protected
Strides Therapeutic Horsemanship Center  is a non-profit organization in southeastern Washington that provides people with disabilities an opportunity to achieve their functional goals in a safe and secure environment -- goals that they never before dreamed possible. We serve riders with disabilities such as: cerebral palsy, down's syndrome, autism, traumatic brain injury, scoliosis, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, stroke, parkinson's disease and developmental delays.  Each rider is paired with a horse that is best suited to assist the rider in achieving their goals.  These horses have an ability to fulfill a need that is not otherwise filled with other forms of therapy.

This GoFundMe is set up because Strides relies on the critical support of our gracious donors & volunteers. Our effective programs would not be possible without the generosity of all these wonderful people.  The cost to care for each horse is $1,500 per year.  There are 15 horses that reside at Strides. We are hoping to raise $25,000 to help provide the best care for our equine therapists.

Winter is difficult on Strides as the horses rely on hay and supplemental feed to maintain their weight.  They also require regular shots & worming to maintain their health. Their feet need to be trimmed just as we humans would trim our fingernails.  Funds will also be used towards the purchase of vet care, improved fencing to keep the horses safe, supplies to build shelters to keep the horses out of the elements, fly spray to keep their skin healthy from pests and so much more .

Strides would love to be able to raise this money by December 1, 2016.  We will not be able to thank you, our generous donors, enough for assisting in meeting the needs of these horses.  It would mean the world to not only this amazing program, but to all the people that the program serves.

One extra unique fact about Strides is that Strides has rescued 4 of its horses from going to slaughter as well as 2 others who were in poor conditions.  These horses have experienced abandonment, fear, hunger and pain prior to coming to Strides.  Strides has given them food, safety, health care and love as well as retrained them to serve our riders.  Strides would love to be able to provide a refuge to more horses in need of saving, but first we need to be able to provide for those that already call Strides home.  One of the aforementioned horses that was destined for slaughter was Hope .  Read the short story about Hope below as well as a comment from a past client:

"A client was having a very difficult day during a lesson this month.  He was very tense while working next to his regular horse Hope.  Hope sensed this and gently turned towards the boy and pressed her head into his chest; she left her head there as if to say 'it's going to be okay' for several minutes.  As the minutes passed by the boy began to calm and was able to continue with his lesson." | Jill, program director & riding instructor

"Strides is an answered prayer! I've regained strength & balance. To be able to ride again has brought me so much joy & independence!" | C.A., spinal cord injury
