Teresa Anderson Out-of-Network Medical Bills

As many of you may know, our dear friend, co-worker, partner, sister, mother, Teresa Anderson found a lump in her breast in June of 2018. Knowing that she had a genetic predisposition for Breast Cancer with her sister already fighting a similar battle, she immediately sought testing. Teresa was diagnosed with triple negative, stage 2b, grade 3 Breast Cancer, and she started treatment immediately.
With roughly 6 months of chemotherapy done with Asheville’s Hope Women’s Cancer Center, she had surgery on January 14, 2019 for a double mastectomy and reconstruction. The surgery was successful with the doctor confident that he was able to remove 100% of the malignant tissue! Teresa will have a course of radiation and potentially some other preventative treatment, but the end of this part of her journey is in sight!
With great news also often comes the burden of great expense. There are a limited number of surgeons in Asheville who perform the reconstructive portion of the surgery that Teresa required. After multiple pre-op consults, only one of these surgeons would perform the specific surgery that her oncology team recommended.
The surgeon who ultimately did the procedure is out of network, and Teresa and her family are looking at unanticipated costs of $8,000. Teresa is currently seeking an exception with the insurance company to treat the surgeon as in network to mitigate some of this cost, but as her friends and family, we are looking to help take the focus off the finances and allow her to focus on healing.
Teresa has endured extraordinary circumstances in the last 6 months, not the least of which was the unexpected passing of her mother the day before her surgery. Thankfully, Teresa was able to be with her mom when she passed, but with the added emotional toll of this loss, our efforts to reduce the financial burden of her surgery will be that much more impactful.
