Rebuilding a community

In 2015, the largest storm to ever hit the Pacific ocean had a direct hit on Vanuatu, killing no less than a dozen people including a young mother and her child as they looked for shelter. Tenants and Staff of Compass Housing Services are aiming to raise $140,000 to rebuild 2 important community hubs in the South Pacific island nation of Vanuatu.
All is in place to start construction as soon as funds are available, in order to finish before the next storm season.
Help us to save lives and rebuild the future of this beautiful culture.

Prior to its collapse during Cyclone Pam, the Freswota Stage and Community Centre was utilised by all locals, particularly the people of poorer communities.
The stage was a crucial social and enterprise hub. Cultural and musical concerts were held on the stage. It was used as a meeting place for community and volunteer groups and it was the main arena for community celebrations and events.
The stage was also to site of the local market where local villages could sell handcrafts and local produce; equipping the local villagers with skills and motivation. The sporting fields where the stage is located, are still used although they are neglected. Basketball courts have no basketball hoops, the soccer ground has a wooden post at each end, but no nets.

Project 2 - Remote island community center.

The construction of the New Generation Community Centre & Cyclone Refuge will provide a hub for NGOs and aid organisations to facilitate programs including education, training, womens groups and health seminars. It will also provide a much-needed space for social enterprise and engagement. The building will be a vital community facility. There is no other covered community facility at Whitesands and no cyclone protection. Besides offering shelter during cyclonic weather, this Category 5 rated building will play an important role in the aftermath of natural disasters in the distribution of aid and dissemination of information.
