Greeting! Many of you know who I am and what I do for a living. For those of you who don't, allow me to introduce myself: My name is Porcha. I am 29 years old. I have a 10-year old daughter; her dad passed  in 2015, so I am her sole parent. I am originally from New York City but moved to Nashville, TN one year ago.  I am a contractor employee within the state of Tennessee as a well a part-time student at Vanderbilt University in pursuit of my MBA degree.

Unfortunately, I have been furloughed since December 26th, 2018.  Myself and many others whom I work alongside were informed by our contracting agency that our work would have to be halted until further notice pending the government shutdown cease. Like most of us,I have no idea when the shutdown will end but once it does I was advised that I'll be able to return back to my position. I will then have to wait another pay period to receive my next paycheck. Therefore, I know there will be a bit of a stretch between now and then.  Unlike employees of the federal agencies impacted by the shutdown,  contractor employees like myself, have not gotten back pay for work lost during shutdowns.

I received my last paycheck on December 28th, which I used to pay my electricity and gas bill, a portion of January rent and other essential expenses. I could not pay all of my January rent and still owe $525 towards it BUT thankfully my property management was very understanding as I have never been late on my rent and since she is also aware of the shutdown. I provided her with a letter from my employer, she has waived the 10% late fee and will avoid the eviction filing, so long as I provide the rest of the rent by January 31st.  This is great because I won't have a ding on my rental history or public record.

My hope is to at least raise enough money to contribute toward food, household goods, utilities, bills, and February rent. In the meantime, I have turned to the gig economy to also bring in at least some income by doing DoorDash and Postmates food deliveries between my colleges courses. I have also visited a food bank and their staff were gracious enough to supply me with a several non-perishable food items. Meanwhile, I will continue to do what I can to take care of both myself and my daughter. Even the smallest of donations will help. I thank anyone who can help or even for their words of encouragement during this stressful time.

P.S. Please feel free to message me with any advice or ANY local resources you may know about.

hank you and God bless you all!

Just an update: Thank you those who've either messaged me or donated toward my cause! I truly appreciate the kindness.

As of yesterday, I was able to make enough money while doing DoorDash deliveries to finish paying off January's rent. Thankfuly for now, I don't have the constant fear of being evicted. Now it's just a matter of handling a few more bills, as well as rolling into February's debts.

I am having some car trouble now so once that's repaired in the next week or so, I can continue doing either Postmates and DoorDash deliveries again for some extra cash. I have started applying for other jobs full-time jobs because none of us knows when this shutdown will end; even my employer isn't offering solutions or answers to. So I would rather be proactive and seek gainful employment -- even if it means resigning (I have a family to take care of). I've gotten called back for two interviews so far, both set up for next week, so I'll keep you guys posted. Wish me the best for that!
