Technology for Autism, Now (Boston Marathon)

Tax deductible
I am very excited to be running the 2019 Boston Marathon in April with Team TAN (Technology for Autism Now, Inc.). TAN’s mission is to improve the lives of children and families living with autism through innovative technology solutions. TAN Inc. collaborates with parents, caregivers, teachers, and all related healthcare professionals to advocate for quality communication tools and emerging assistive technology applications.

This cause is a very important one to me and my family because my nephew, Ben, who will turn three this January, was diagnosed with ASD six months ago. Since his diagnosis, he has started OT and ABA and has continued to receive speech services. He also received developmental therapy through Early Intervention. Ben has made extraordinary progress in the time that he has been receiving these supports, and it is a testament to the hard work of his service providers, and of course, my sister and brother-in-law.

As a former special education teacher, I can attest to the amount of work, knowledge, skill, and care that additional service providers brandish on a daily basis. As a sister, I can vouch for the amount of love, patience, and dedication that the families of children with autism put forth. I also know that the roles of everyone involved in teaching and working with children with autism are made infinitely easier when the proper tools are available to them. Assistive technology and other communication tools are invaluable in teaching and interacting with children with ASD. These types of tools allow for people with autism to engage with the world on their terms and have the potential to truly change lives. Individuals with autism can learn to accomplish everyday tasks (and beyond) and become more functional and independent at home, in school, and within their communities.

Donations would assist TAN in developing current and future technology solutions and would make it easier for TAN to provide digital "toolkits", support resources, and webinars to families. Donations could also potentially aid TAN in providing parent & teacher training on TAN's newest app, AutiKnow.

AutiKnow is a mobile educational app designed to teach individuals on the autism spectrum practical skills, and to assist in learning, organization, and task sequencing. In addition, AutiKnow collects behavioral information on how these individuals learn and uses this data to better understand autism and potential ways to more effectively treat individuals on the spectrum.

I sincerely appreciate any donations made to this organization on my behalf. I know this is a tough time of year for many people financially, and I am incredibly grateful for any amount of support!!! Thanks!
