The lovely Mariya Lanae Wright  was born - December 19, 2005 in Little Rock, AR. Ever since then she has been the apple of her mothers eye! She changed her life forever and becoming Mariya’s  mom was her number one priority. Mariya’s  favorite thing to do is dance, act, rap and spend time with friends and family. When she's performing on stage she forgets about her illness and it helps her to express herself through her talents.

Her dream is to become a pediatric hematologist oncologist and be the first patient with Sickle Cell to cure Sickle Cell. She also would like to still pursue a career part time in the entertainment industry. Sickle Cell Disease is something that she was born with. Her mother found out that she was diagnosed on December 24, 2005. Sickle Cell Disease is an inherited condition her father has S trait and her mother has the C trait so together that makes SC Disease.

Red blood cells are responsible for carrying oxygen throughout the body, red blood cells are typically round and healthy but some of her cells are shaped like crescents. These crescent cells have rigid edges and are very sticky which can cause blockage. Once those cells create blockage then there is a lack of oxygen and blood flow going to that area. Sickle Cell can also cause organ damage. As of right now the only cure is a Bone Marrow Transplant but she is not a candidate because she must have a 100% match. The match would need to come from a full sibling and she does not have any full siblings only half siblings. They also have haplo identical transplant but its more risky because it's done with a parent.

Mariya’s  symptoms are fatigue, headaches, anemia, and pain crisis in her arms and legs which causes excruciating pain. Sickle Cell has changed her way of thinking tremendously. It has provided her with a purpose and an opportunity to educate and create awareness about Sickle Cell Disease. She does not  pity herself for having this disease She reflects that  "GOD made me special and he is going to provide me with the strength to endure this journey. “

Mariya would like to start a Non Profit for Sickle Cell Disease so that she can create awareness and assist with fundraising for a cure. She use her platform to bring  awareness through her non profit. Mariya will speak with other youth that may be facing this same disease or even other illnesses to encourage them that you can still be anything that you want to in life.  "I want to uplift others and share my story.  I want people to know that you can still do anything that you put your mind too”.

The one thing that Mariya would tell someone with SC?  " Stay true to GODS word, continue to read the bible and speak healing into existence. Make sure you remain active as possible to keep the blood flowing constantly throughout your body, stay hydrated, eat healthy, stay positive and never give up.” Mariya stays encouraged by reading her bible, praying, working hard & setting goals.

Mariya told us that her mom is her hero. "I remember when I was a little girl I told her that I wanted to move to California so that I could be on TV and pursue my career. She looked at me, smiled and said ok let's take a trip there first and pray about it. We went to CA for spring break and from that moment we knew that it was time to move. She has sacrificed for me alot. We completely uprooted and stepped 100% out on faith and moved to California despite everyone telling her she was crazy. Most importantly she believed in me and that meant the world to me. She never allows me to get down and she always reassures me that everything will be ok. She inspires me to do my best, she is someone that I look up to and she truly understands me. She continues to keep me uplifted in the word of GOD and she always encourages me to pursue my dreams."

Why are you just now coming out about having SC?  "When I was in elementary school a student over heard the nurse saying that I had SC and because of that I was bullied which affected me tremendously. At that moment I  decided to not talk about it because it was a hard subject for me to talk about because kids can be mean when they're not knowledgeable about a situation. I got tired of my friends constantly asking me about my illness, it was almost like they had forgotten that I was still Mariya. I told my mom that i always wanted people to know me by "Mariya" who I am as a person and my talents not by my illness. Now I feel like i have accomplished that and it's time for me to use my platform to create awareness and become an advocate."
