During my thru-hike of the Pacific Crest Trail in 2012, I met a resourceful and quirky young man named Andy Lyon. He was on leave from UC Berkeley where he was studying astrophysics. Little did we know at the time, Andy who’s trail name became “Astro” was battling cancer. Andy remarkably finished the entire PCT while getting off trail several times to receive medical treatment. Not even a year later we lost a dear friend. Perhaps more importantly, we lost a brilliant young mind with the kind of social consciousness that we desperately need for the future. On June 23rd I will be accompanied by three companions as we thru-hike 1200 miles on the Pacific Northwest Trail from Glacier National Park in Montana to Olympic National Park on the Pacific Ocean in honor of our friend. Team Astro 2015!
