Team Therese

In August 2016, something happened that would change the direction of Therese’s life.  Therese’s doctors have explained what happened to her is a one in a million type of occurrence, and that she was able to survive a 20% survival rate. While vacationing in British Columbia Therese contracted a bacterial infection which made her body go into septic shock. Therese was brought to emergency and underwent surgery. She suffered two cardiac arrests on the operating table. Her doctors, in their attempts to save her, gave her medication that would help blood circulate to her vital organs. Therese was in a coma for over a week following her surgery. When she came to, and was fully cognizant, her surgeon openly cried.

Therese is a living miracle.

In the months that have followed, Therese has stayed steadfast in her uphill battle. The negative impact to the medication that helped to save her life was the loss of circulation to some of her extremities. In consequence, prior to Christmas, Therese underwent surgery to amputate both of her legs below the knee. In January Therese again underwent surgery, this time to amputate her fingers.

You may think that all of these challenges would dampen Therese’s spirit and drive. Quite the opposite. For those of us who know her well, Therese’s faith-filled, determined and positive outlook has been a constant. When talking to Therese about her resiliency, she takes very little credit for it. Instead she credits the support of her ‘team’ – her parents, sister, boyfriend, extended family members, her St. Edmund family and large group of friends.

By the New Year, Therese was learning to walk again. Presently she is walking without assistance!

Therese is a daily inspiration to her family, friends, and colleagues. As her friends and colleagues we would like to somehow thank her for her inspiration and support her with her challenges. We think the best way to do this is to help her regain independence, as well as realize her dreams, through supporting her with the on-going costs of rehabilitation, prosthetics, homecare equipment and renovations for accessibility.  Although Ontario health care covers some costs associated with rehabilitation and equipment needs, it is limited to very basic needs. Going forward, it is estimated that personal costs will likely exceed a million over the next ten years. In order to alleviate some of the costs to Therese and her parents we are looking for donations through GoFundMe. In particular we would like to raise money toward leg prosthetics (for walking, running and swimming) finger prosthesis, compression gloves and treatment for the hypertrophic scars on her hands. Thank you to all friends and family who are able to donate. We are hoping to expand on Therese’s Team by asking you to consider forwarding this link to family and friends.

Lastly, she wants everyone to know how grateful she is for your support and hope to give you either a hug emoji or a hug in person one day! Much love from her and she offers this prayer she learnt for everyone:
