Hi! My name is Lori McDaniel. Natalie is my daughters classmate at Holy Trinity School in San Pedro, CA. Natalie Martinez was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in first grade. In her years of battling cancer, she has been through a plethora of procedures and chemotherapy with success. Unfortunately, after 9 months of being off treatment, her Leukemia is back.

Cancer is emotionally, physically, and financially draining, especially after just having finished treatment only 9 months ago! There are few times in our lives where you can REALLY make a difference in someone's life. Together, let's make a difference by helping the Martinez family during this extremely challenging time! The funds will go towards Natalie's medical bills and to supplement the family financially as Julie (Natalie's mom) has had to take a leave of absence from work. Rafael (Natalie's dad) has also had to cut down on the amount of clients he serves in order to be with Vincent (Natalie's 7 year old brother) and meet his needs. Remember..."No matter how you try to make the world a better place, the first step always starts with helping each other."

On behalf of the Martinez family, they would like to thank everyone for their kindness, support, & generosity during this very difficult time. Your prayers and assistance are deeply appreciated. Together we can see this through!

Sincerest thanks,
Lori McDaniel

Hi Everyone!

I hope the new year finds you happy and healthy! Julie wrote a thank you & update that she asked me to relay to all of you. Here it is.

Dear Friends,
It's really hard to put into words the overwhelming gratitude I feel from the kindness, generosity, love and support that you've shown our family during this unimaginable time. I never would've imagined that things could get any worse after the devastating news of our precious Natalie's relapse (Leukemia) in June. Then came October 27th when my husband, Rafael, suffered a Hemorrhagic Stroke. Our world was completely turned upside down! In early October, I was terrified to the core that I was going to lose my daughter to a very serious infection that had her in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. By the end of October, after Natalie was out of the woods, that fear took over again as my husband fought for his life in his own ICU for weeks.
Just writing this, I feel so grateful for how far our family has come over the last 3 months! Natalie continues to do well with treatment and has enjoyed lots of "feel good" days which we NEVER take for granted. Rafael is working hard in Acute Rehab with speech, occupational, and physical therapy. It's going to be a long road, but thankfully he's becoming more aware, is talking and is starting to regain some sensation on his right side!
Many ask how our Vincent (7 years old) is doing through all of this. It's been very difficult for him, however, he too has been given the strength of positivity and hope which he'll share every now and then. I remember driving him to school in November, and he said out of the blue, "Mom, everything's under control...Dad's just taking a nap in HIS hospital (Rafael was in a coma at the time) and Natalie's feeling better in HER hospital...So we're good!" I'm so proud of my boy!
You know, it would be easy to think that God had abandoned our family after all that's happened to us, but then, He shows his presence EVERYDAY through the loving people like you who are surrounding us and truly carrying us through this difficult, sometimes seemingly impossible, time.
Please know that your kindness will stay with us ALWAYS!

Julie, Rafael, Natalie & Vincent Martinez

Hi everyone!

I'm writing to make you aware of what has happened to the Martinez family over the past 2 1/2 weeks. I held off on posting this until the family was ready.

On October 27th Rafael Martinez suffered a massive hemorrhagic stroke (ruptured blood vessel that causes bleeding into the brain). He has been in a coma ever since. The doctors are hopeful that he will wake up, but have told Julie that it is going to be a looooooong recovery.

As if dealing with a child with Leukemia isn't enough stress, the situation with Rafael has been devastating for Julie and Rafael's family! Julie is currently receiving half pay and is going to lose her benefits at the end of January. Obviously, Rafael will not be able to work for a very long time. She has the weight of the world on her shoulders and is doing the best she can to be there for Natalie, Rafael, & Vincent. I don't know how she is keeping it together! She is incredibly strong, although, she would disagree with that!

The kids know their dad is in the hospital. They think their dad is "asleep" while the doctors make him better. If you mention Rafael in front of your children, please be aware of this. Until they have a better idea of Rafael's prognosis, this is all Julie wants the kids to know.

Also, Natalie is dealing with some problems with her liver. As of last night, she was very possibly going to be transferred to ICU.

I will keep you updated as things change. Until then, Julie is asking for prayers, prayers, & more prayers!

Good morning! I wanted to follow up on Natalie's condition. Fortunately, after a very scary week and a half, Natalie is doing much better!!! Her infection improved after they removed her central line (a surgically placed IV inserted into a large vein that goes directly to the heart). Her ANC (ability to fight infection) is improving. Her blood cultures are negative. She is being watched closely by her cardiologist, gastroenterologist, infectious disease doctor, and Nephrologist (kidney dr.). She is continuing to deal with many issues, but none of which are life threatening like before. If you would like more frequent updates from Julie Martinez, please go to Team Natalie on FB.
The Martinez Family wants you all to know how much your prayers, thoughts, well wishes, & donations mean to them!!!!!! I cannot express that strongly enough!!!!!! Bye for now!

Sincerest thanks & appreciation,
Lori McDaniel & Martinez Family
