We’ve been struggling with this news for a few weeks now but, I can’t keep it quiet for any longer.
Our Dear Friend, Marla Malone, has been diagnosed with cervical cancer....words that NO ONE EVER wants to hear. So, I am hoping that this community will rally behind Marla like she has always done for all of us!
Through all of her selfless volunteer work, I truly believe that she has touched every life, in one way or the other, throughout this great community. We want her to be able to focus on her recovery and not have to worry about all the bills hanging over her head for years to come.
Details:
· On June 12, 2019 Marla was diagnosed with Cervical Cancer.
· Her doctor referred her Texas Oncology in Ft. Worth as Wichita Falls doesn’t have a Gynecologic Oncologist.
· Given some good news at her appointment in Ft. Worth. Stage 1, they caught it early so prognosis is good.
· The plan is surgery to hopefully remove all the cancer. They will know more once they are in there and can see.
· A complete hysterectomy is scheduled for July 24th at Harris Methodist in Ft. Worth.
Even though she is blessed to have insurance, it certainly doesn't cover everything. She has been asked to pay the hospital portion of $3,000 up front before her surgery date. She explained to them there is no way she can do that so they are giving her additional time to figure out what she can pay. She will be required to pay 'her portion' of additional bills from at least the following:
- Surgeon
- Anesthesiologist
- Pathologist
- Radiologist
and more.
Being a single mom with 2 kids running a household on her own doesn’t leave much for saving for emergencies like this.
She will be off work for 4 weeks. She has only been with MSU for 7 months so she doesn’t have her sick and vacation time built up enough to cover the time she will be out. We are grateful that MSU has a sick time pool and they have been very generous and agreed to help cover her time for the recovery process as much as possible.
One thing Marla wants to come out of this is for more people to know what options are available. The great news is that there is now a vaccine for the HPV Virus that leads to almost all types of female cancers. If you have a teen daughter or son we urge you to make sure they have the vaccine. It prevents the female from getting the virus and prevents the males from passing the virus. Most people are carriers walking around with it and will never know unless something like this happens. PLEASE take the time and do the research, ask your child’s doctor, get the vaccine for them so they are not in their 40’s and diagnosed with cancer. This can be prevented!
