After 30 years of marriage, the love and partnership that Dan and Jares Gallagher have together is one of the greatest blessings in life. When a partnership is this strong, anything that affects one partner equally affects the other.
In November, 2015, it was confirmed that Dan had stage-4 prostate cancer that had moved to his lymph nodes prior to diagnosis. As the cancer was confined to the prostate and limited lymph node infection, we were able to maintain a healthy lifestyle through 2016. It was a year of changes and complete dedication to Dan’s health.
In January, 2017, Dan began to have a lot of abdominal and bone pain that signified the cancer was on an aggressive path.
Throughout his battle with cancer, we have been blessed with compassionate and top-notch medical care. This includes, but is not limited to, a primary care physician Las Cruces, NM and oncologists at both CHRISTUS St. Vincent Cancer Center in Santa Fe, NM & MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX.
Our second trip to MD Anderson, during the first week of February, 2017, revealed that Dan’s cancer had aggressively spread into his bones. At that same visit, we learned that Dan had developed a condition known as Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC). The DIC has caused a great deal of swelling in Dan’s abdomen and legs.
Due to the information received at MD Anderson, Dan started an 18-week chemotherapy treatment. During this treatment phase, he has also required numerous blood and platelet transfusions to maintain adequate levels.
As this news of the cancer was unfolding, we also received information that as of April 1st, 2017, our employment contract would end, leaving us unemployed.
We needed to commit to the chemotherapy and the care of Dan’s DIC without reservation or consideration for financial implications.
Insurance premiums, deductibles, travel to and from treatments, medical supplies and many unexpected expenses were manageable in 2016…but are daunting to consider for 2017.
We humbly ask for financial support to assist us with expenses associated directly with Dan’s medical needs.
We are committed, along with our friends, and our medical team to assist Dan back to a healthy and active lifestyle.
We appreciate any financial support to help us through this part of our lives and the remainder of 2017.
