Dear Friends,
The events of early January 2019 forever changed the lives of the Testin family.
Dan had a massive stroke leaving him completely disabled. He was unable to communicate other than blinking. He received nutrition through a PEG tube, and the doctors could not predict his potential for improvement. Since early January, Dan has made progress to the point where he is able to eat solid foods, use his large and small motor skills and to verbalize. However, the reality of the situation is that he still has a very long way to go.
Dan spent 6 1/2 months in the hospital and various rehabilitation facilities. In August, the insurance company refused to fund further inpatient services and Dan was sent home. The Testin family is happy to have him back in his familial environment but there are daily challenges that continue with care and rehabilitation.
Research shows the first 18 months after a stroke are CRITICAL for maximum recovery. Karen has been a complete “rock” throughout this situation and has lined up a team of physical, occupational and speech therapists that work with Dan daily to support his progressive recovery in the inpatient environment.
With Dan at home, significant challenges and costs exist associated with continued recovery. There are caps and gaps with insurance including uncertainty with the timing of coverage eligibility.
This is where we come in . . . . .
This email is intended to initiate a fundraising campaign to offset/defray medically related expenses for Dan. We cannot anticipate all costs but are aware of home renovations required for accessibility, daily nursing assistants, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, handicap transportation, and other day to day out of pocket medical costs.
Below are some of the known short-term costs facing Dan:
Bathroom renovation and relocation for handicap accessibility$30,000
Certified nursing assistant $65,000
Physical, Occupational and Speech therapy $70,000
Chairlift for stairs $5,000
Handicap accessible transportation$45,000
Health Insurance out-of-pocket costs$25,000
The objective is to help the Testin family offset these expenses with a fundraising effort and a goal of $250,000 by reaching out to the many people who have asked “How can we help?”
