In 1987, a public school art teacher and mother of three led a dozen student and adult volunteers into New York City late one Saturday night on something called a 'Midnight Run'; at the time they called themselves 'Interact', and their intention was to meet some strangers who could use a little attention and kindness and a warm meal. In 1989, Hastings High School hosted the first Thanksgiving Dinner for the Homeless, where art teacher Jeanne Newman personally welcomed each of the 125 homeless and working poor guests who'd been bused in from the city - a practice she repeats each and every year.
Served by student volunteers (who also help prep and cook, with help from some adult counterparts), our guests were treated to a healthy, home cooked meal in the most modest of settings: the high school cafeteria.

Around this time, Interact would become Project S.H.A.R.E., and now as SHARE the Project, Inc., we thank you for visiting.

From Midnight Runs to farmers' markets to Project Prom, our goal is to immerse high school students and youth in service events in their community. For almost 30 years, thousands of middle and high school students have experienced getting involved, learning what it can be to become an active member in today's society and to promote a better one tomorrow.

For the Thanksgiving Dinner, up to twenty school buses bring most of our guests from all five boroughs and Westchester County, looking forward to a personal welcome, a smile, a wave, a handshake. This volunteer run and executed Dinner is a point of holiday joy for not only our guests but for the hundreds of volunteers, who look forward to this night year after year, many of whom go on to continue in the tradition of service to community.

While all of the work is done by volunteers, there are still mounting costs. Perishable goods, cooking and cleaning supplies, equipment, storage, guest transportation.

Help make Tuesday, November 20st, 2018 an evening to remember for hundreds of folks at the 29th Annual Thanksgiving Dinner for the Homeless!

As we have already kick-started the holidays with Thanksgiving, we are entering the busiest giving season of all: from November through January, charities just like ours, rely heavily on the kindness of strangers, as well as friends and family to help them do what they do best.
Our deepest thanks to all who so generously gave so that we could continue the tradition of providing a warm and nutritional holiday meal to hundreds of food-insecure men, women and children on November 20th. About 600 people went home happy and full, many of them taking leftovers with them. Another 500 or so who could not attend, enjoyed their meal through the Yonkers YMCA where we dropped off the overflow of our bounty.
We do it because we can. And we do it because all of you so generously gave.
During this season of love and light, remember those who simply have so little and acknowledge your own blessings that surround you every day.
Take a deep breath. Smile. And embrace all that is good and just.
The Happiest of Holidays, from our house to yours!
Jeanne Newman, Rob Wyatt, our families and all of the fabulous kids at SHARE
