Tchefuncte River Lighthouse

Donation protected
The Tchefuncte River Lighthouse has guided mariners safely into the mouth of the river from Lake Pontchartrain since 1837. Located near New Orleans, Louisiana, the lighthouse is a national treasure that is under attack from wave action and tidal surge events. Hurricanes Katrina and Isaac are the most recent examples, with Isaac pushing over 8 feet of water into the lighthouse.
Immediate and historically correct needs for the lighthouse are: windows in the stairwell, the lightening rod needs repairing, the bricks around the door need to be replaced, the entire exterior and interior needs to be painted, and ventilation mechanisms in the lamp room need to be fabricated and installed.
Long term vision includes construction of the  bulkhead, breakwater, and dock system to protect the lighthouse from further erosion. Once complete we will be able to take tours of the lighthouse from the Maritime Museum's dock located two miles up the river. The Maritime Museum is the custodian for the lighthouse and the Lightkeeper's Cottage, under a management agreement with the town of Madisonville. The Lightkeeper's cottage currently resides on the grounds of the museum.
After the improvements, the Maritime Museum will use the lighthouse for education history and to promote tourism. The engineering design may be seen on the museum's website at www.lpbmm.org. The permitted project, received November 7,  2016, is shovel ready!
Help us to save our lighthouse!
