Tara's Stroke Recovery

$29,971 of $65,000 goal

Hey everyone, you may or may not know that on 3/15 Tara Dickman had a very massive stroke affecting about 75% of the left side of her brain. Subsequently, she required a lifesaving hemi craniectomy in which they removed part of the skull on the left side of her head to allow the brain to swell without causing any more damage. (Don't worry, they are keeping it in the freezer until she can get it put back on). It was unclear if she would be able to understand or speak again. She currently has no movement on the right side of her body and is unable to speak, but she does understand some things and still shows that personality through the looks she's been shooting us. She currently has a feeding tube but they started her on real food 3/20 so hopefully that tube comes out soon!!

The next step from here is an intense couple of weeks of stroke therapy at an inpatient facility followed by an extended stay in a professional nursing facility where she will continue therapy until she gets to come home. We have a very long road ahead of us but Tara has an AMAZING group of friends and family that care so very much for her.

We are trying to get her into RIC, which is the best stroke rehab facility in the country. RIC is located in Chicago which is where she will go for those crucial first two weeks of intense therapy if they accept her as a patient. We are raising money to help with medical expenses, nursing facility expenses, and travel expenses to and from Chicago for Tara and Steve (who hasn't left her side since the stroke happened, and plans to be by her side every step of the way). Getting her to Chicago will require medical transport for which the insurance company will not pay.

ANYthing you are able to contribute will be so helpful to the family. Let's help her get the very best care we can and get her back to that wonderful, martini-drinking, fun-loving women we all know and love!

Tara had her PFO (hole in her heart) closed today. Everything went great! She was feeling good after the procedure and we just got back from taking Stevie to visit. She is staying overnight just so they can keep an eye on her vitals and her femoral sites where they went through her legs to do the procedure.

She will be home tomorrow ❤️

Next stop: Chicago...next weekend! Time to get her back talking like smart-ass she was before

Hey guys! It's been a long time since I updated everyone and I've had several people checking in on Mom, so I thought an update would be nice.

Tara is doing really well. She's getting around great with her cane, and is even practicing walking without it in the house! We are hoping that cane won't be around for too long.

Her arm still isn't functional and her speech is still not great. She is able to say some things but speech is our biggest hurdle right now.

She will be heading back to Chicago the entire month of October for an intensive aphasia program to try to get her speech back. She will be working hard for 5 hours a day, 5 days a week while in Chicago. She's very hopeful for this therapy but also a little worried about what happens if it doesn't work, but we are all very excited for her to go up there!

Before she leaves for Chicago, she will be getting her PFO (the hole in her heart) closed, so that no more clots make it to her brain to cause another stroke. This is a pretty easy procedure and she will most likely just have to stay overnight in the hospital. Once this is closed, and she is back from Chicago, the goal is to eventually remove her IVC filter, which is in place right now to catch any clots from her legs.

We cannot thank all of you enough for the. Amount of support and contributions to her GoFund me page. Because of all of your help, this next Chicago trip will be much less of a financial burden. ❤️

Thank you all!!

Mom's surgery was postponed for a couple weeks! They want to hold off a little longer to see if the swelling can go down any more so they don't have to place a drain during the surgery. She wasn't very happy about it but definitely understands. She's still making great progress and getting stronger and saying more words every day. BUT we can't wait to get rid of that dang helmet!
