Take Heart Counseling & Equine Assisted Therapy

Mission: Empowering individuals and families to find hope, healing, and wholeness through therapeutic work with horses.

Take Heart offers traditional counseling, equine assisted counseling, and equine assisted learning workshops for individuals, couples, and families going through a variety of circumstances and struggles. Take Heart's name comes from Jesus' encouragement in John 16:33, "In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

All donations, big or small, are greatly appreciated - as is your continued prayer support and spreading the word among your family and friends! I can't thank you enough!

This summer and fall have gone by in a blur. I'm so thankful for the healing that's happening here. Truth is being discovered. Hearts are being restored. The good things happening haven't been without their challenges though: Charley is having serious back pain, and is working with a chiropractor and acupuncturist which seems to be helping bring some relief; Noble is feeling sore in his left front foot, and we are working with his vet and farrier to find a cause and treat him; one goat Twila was attacked by stray dogs and needed veterinary care and lived in our basement for a week while healing; a tree came down inches from our power line.... you get the idea. All this has put a strain on us financially this year and we will likely be ending the year far below goal due to these unexpected expenses.

However, we are determined to continue fundraising for a riding ring because of the opportunity it would bring for the possibilities of serving many more here at Take Heart. If we had a ring, we could:
-have multiple sessions at the same time because of more areas to work with clients
-more comfortably offer group sessions and workshops
-have better footing year round; mud keeps us in the dry lot and limits what we can do in sessions
-have a bigger space to exercise (and turn out) the horses more regularly which will improve their strength and health

You can see that it will make a huge difference at Take Heart. Every donation, big or small, gets us closer to our goal! It is a big goal as there are lots of materials needed for this project, since we literally will be starting with a patch of forest. ;) I'm confident that God will provide everything we need - he has done so this whole time with building Take Heart - and we would be honored if you would be part of that through your giving! Thank you for your support of the good things happening here. :)

Don't you love how spring reminds us that all things can be made new? What was dry and dead is now green and flowering.
We have some new things this spring at Take Heart too! We just finished our third week of sessions at our new property. The horses are happy here and I'm glad to see new hope budding in clients' lives as we work together. And we have a new horse! Captain was donated on April 1 and is already gaining popularity as the tall, dark, and handsome fellow with the heart-winning personality.
Captain relates to clients on a lot of levels. He is a thoroughbred, and thus very sensitive and intuitive. A grandson of Secretariat, he had a fairly successful racing career early in life, but somewhere along the road was dumped and neglected. His previous owner found him starving at some sales lot, and brought him home where he learned a new life and how to trust again.
How many of us have felt those highs and lows? On top of the world one day, and before you know it, you're down in the deepest, darkest pit. Captain has too, and is a beautiful example of how God can make all things new, and can use those dead, dark, winter days to bring spring in your life and the lives of others. ♡

Now that we are moved, donations can be specifically applied in certain areas of need, or given for wherever the need is most at the time.
Specific needs:
1. Horse care. Feeding these boys and making sure they have the supplements they need to keep them feeling good is our biggest cost. Charley is on stomach ulcer and arthritis supplements, and Captain is on arthritis supplements and needs to eat a little more than Charley and Noble to keep his weight up. Regular health care costs such as veterinary care, hoof trims, and shoes for Captain until we can get him comfortable barefoot, are also high.
2. Support for families in need. Take Heart works on a sliding scale to help be affordable for all, but is still out of reach for some. We do offer some pro-bono sessions, but at a very limited availability due to the high costs involved with horses.
3. Farm improvement projects. We are moved and are so pleased with the beautiful little farm we now have! However, there are several projects that will make the farm even more usable, and will allow us to grow and serve even more families in our community. Specifically, we would like to clear more room for riding, and more pasture for the horses. Being in the woods, this is no easy task! With time and your help, we can get there.

Thanks for all you do to support us!

This fall has been busier than ever. I work with 10-15 clients each week, despite less light in the evenings and the increasing cold. Arms are open and are receiving healing and hope. Hallelujah! Fall has held lots of transitions for us. Beloved mares Coco and Choca have moved on to new homes where they can be treasured by their new families. Noble has joined the team and is quickly building his repertoire as a healing horse. Charley held his own during the changes, but is currently on stall rest for a stifle injury. X-rays ruled out any broken bones, but we suspect a torn or strained muscle or tendon in the area is causing him pain. The poor guy really wants to get back into his routine! The new property is coming along, albeit slowly because we are doing the work ourselves. We have had to do a couple extra projects like drainage and grading, which will help in the long run, but slows down "visual progress" in the short term. Those of you who know me personally know I love to "see" progress! But we continue to see God's hand at work. We have had help often with these projects, the weather has been unusually warm for winter, allowing us to keep working underground, and we are continually surprised by things that show up for us, like a free 14x28' shed! I've included some photos of the work we are doing. Compare that back yard to the photo in the previous update! Please continue to pray for safety as we work, helping hands, and materials for the next stages. We need to improve the shed for hay storage and a tack room/office, then build on a run-in shed for the horses. Thank you for your continued support!

Hi everyone - we have had SUCH a busy summer! School starting again has given me a little more time to reflect and plan.

So far in 2015 (as of September 1st) , Take Heart has served over 35 clients on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, 3 families in family workshops, and 4 girls in summer camp! Take Heart is also served by 8-10 amazing volunteers each week, and took on an incredible intern in July who cares for the horses, observes, and participates in sessions.

A lot is changing with Take Heart - including our fundraising efforts! Now that we have a beautiful and peaceful property, our main focus through the fall is transforming this property into a place of healing and calm for horses and clients.

Check out the new GoFundMe updated page - and share with friends and family! Thank you for your continued support. We are so blessed to serve in this way.
