Help Send ANKORS to Club Health Conference in Dublin

ANKORS has been accepted to present our ground-breaking work on drug checking and polysubstance use research at the International Club Health Conference in Dublin in May 2017 – we need your help to get there!

Harm reduction with people who use drugs has again become a critical issue. In 2016, there were 915 overdose deaths just in British Columbia, as well as tens of thousands of non-fatal overdoses. That is almost 3 overdose deaths for every single day of 2016! A large number of these overdoses were due to contamination of drugs with the opioid fentanyl and the 100-times more potent carfentanil (elephant tranquilizer). We are hearing reports fentanyl is even turning up in party drugs, so every drug user is potentially at risk!

Drug checking is a key harm reduction strategy that aims to help people understand the substances they are taking. Drug checking helps people find out if their drugs have been misrepresented or contaminated thus helping them to make more informed and healthier personal choices. Chloe Sage—ANKORS’ harm reduction coordinator and drug checking guru, and Warren Michelow—who helped bring the Sanctuary safe space to Shambhala and other festivals and was part of MindBodyLove back in the day, have written a detailed and comprehensive guide on drug checking at music festivals and how to set up and run a drug checking service.

Warren and Chloe have been accepted to present this ground-breaking manual to the Club Health Conference in Europe. Club Health Dublin 2017—the “10th International Conference on Nightlife, Substance Use and Related Health Issues” —is the premiere conference on nightlife, club and festival health and issues concerning drug use by mainstream people (http://theclubhealthconference.com)   Along with presenting the guide, Chloe has also been invited to share the work that ANKORS has been doing with drug checking at the Shambhala Music Festival here in BC, and Warren has been invited to present his PhD research on patterns of mixing alcohol and party drugs by regular folks at festivals.

This conference offers an incredible opportunity to share and promote the drug checking guide and the work we do in BC, as well as to learn from world experts in nightlife health and harm reduction—lessons we can bring back to inform the work in our own communities, helping to reduce the negative impacts from substance use here at home.

Please help us to raise funds towards airfare, accommodations in Dublin and conference registration fees. Airfare costs are around $1,300 per ticket after taxes, the conference registration fees are 225 euros each (about $320 CAD each). Even cheap accommodations in Dublin are really, really expensive in late May when the conference takes place so we’re budgeting $1,200 each for that.
