Save the Baxter family's Christmas

MASSENA, N.Y. -- A house fire was quickly put out by firefighters in Massena, but not before claiming the life of a dog inside.

The fire broke out at the home of Megan Jones and Greg Baxter after a reported explosion around 11 a.m. Wednesday, according to WWNY in Watertown. Officials say the fire started in the laundry room area of the two-story residence.

No one was at home when the fire started, and firefighters were able to contain damage the damage to the rear portion of the house.

A dog was killed in the fire, but firefighters were able to recover several Christmas presents that were in the home.

"We did try to save as many presents that were here, seeing how it's Christmas -- that was one of the first things we did after the fire was under control," Massena Fire Chief Ted Kryzwanczyk said. "We wanted to make sure we could save as much as we could."

The house sustained fire, smoke and water damage.
