Our brother, Matthew Coleman, passed away on Tuesday, May 21st. It is a devastation to our family. He was a man of many talents. He went back to school late in life and graduated from Creighton Law School in 2013 at the age of 45. He had written a book and had been planning on renewing his pilot's license. He played the piano and enjoyed music. He loved his family very much and has left behind his wife and 6 children (ages 17 months to 20 years old).
Matt has been sick since January. It started with a respiratory infection and what he called “brain fog”. This was followed by many tests, and over 2 months in the hospital. After several weeks of frustration and worsening symptoms, Matt was sent to the hospital at the University of Iowa where they performed a brain biopsy and finally diagnosed his illness. He was suffering from a rare disease called Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML) caused by a viral infection. He was then started on a special medicine regimen and a rehabilitation treatment plan.
We had hoped with the treatment they prescribed and therapy, he would get better. Sadly, that is not what happened. To say we are in shock is an understatement. Although we are glad that he is no longer suffering, we will sincerely miss his laugh, smiles and ornery nature!! ;)
Because Matt and his wife have not been able to work the last couple of months due to his illness and hospitalization, they have had no income and unfortunately Matt did not have life insurance. It was something he planned to get in the future. Who knew he would need it at only 51? Due to this, his family does not have the finances needed to pay for his funeral. We set up this “Go Fund Me” page with the hope of receiving donations to cover those expenses. Whatever money we receive past the funeral expenses will be used to support Matt’s widow and their 6 children. Please consider helping! Matt was a wonderful, caring man that will be missed greatly!! :(
