Help Francis Fight Cancer

“Well, aren’t you attractive?”

That’s how hairdresser Francis Saba greets every one of his customers – sending their self-esteem soaring the moment they walk into his salon.  If you know Francis, then you know how lucky you are.  Francis is generosity.  He is love. He is compassion. He is friend to all. And he’s the best one-man show in Philadelphia. Getting your hair done is only part of the package when you go see Francis. The rest is pure heart.

On August 1, 2016, Francis, who has owned and operated Francis Salon at 21st and Chestnut Streets in Philadelphia for 20 years, was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).  After a four-week stay at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP), he was discharged in late August.  Since, he has had another round of chemo and found his perfect match (yeah, Brother Jim!) for a bone marrow transplant.  The transplant, which was proceeded by more chemo, was done on 11/30/16, and after another 5 week stay at HUP, Francis came home on New Year’s Eve. It’s been a scary journey and it will continue to be. However, Francis has met each turn with optimism, humor, and charm. But, because of his compromised immune system he has been unable to work since his diagnosis, and will not be able (or allowed) to return to the salon until June of 2017 at the earliest.

Hairdressers don’t have pension plans. If Francis doesn’t work, he makes no money. And the salon may not stay afloat. Francis needs the help of his big, boisterous, and loyal family of friends now more than ever. He and Victor, his husband of 35 years, have been doing their damndest to battle the cancer. But the financial stress it’s put on them is real and frightening, and now includes worry that the Affordable Care Act will be repealed. This could result in 10’s to 100’s of thousands in hospital bills.  Can you help? No donation is too small. If you’re a client, perhaps you can donate the amount of your regular cut? All contributions are greatly appreciated.

Francis has always made sure we have a good time at his place. He is a friend that many of us consider family.  He has been at our weddings (ready to heartily celebrate or clear the room for the bride as he does her hair).  He has been at our Christenings and Brises (and he has had a hand in raising many of our children). He’s always been there for us. Now it’s time for us to be there for him. Please give…and pass this along.
