Sweet Medicine Mural Project @ OPC

Donation protected
Beloved community,

This fall, 3 Realms Collective and Oakland Peace Center are partnering to launch the Sweet Medicine Mural Project, a public arts project of 3 Realms that collaborates with marginalized individuals, communities and organizations in Oakland to co-create murals holding vision and prayer for healing justice. The murals borne from this project are understood to be offerings of “sweet medicine prayer" to the wider community and land in which they live. They stand as temple to the enduring beauty of our intersecting women, queer, working class, immigrant, and people of color communities. Learn more about the Sweet Medicine Mural Project here.

Within the last few months our collective communities have suffered horrific injustices that force us to carry profound mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual traumas. While such targeted violence is not new occurence, the frequency at which these assaults are happening can feel disabling and hopeless. In spirit of resistance to this fear and hate, we recognize the need to fiercly claim and hold spaces dedicated to our collective resilience and love. 3 Realms was founded with this vision in our heart. Our work lives through our gathering in sacred communion, within and across our marginalized communities, to celebrate the curative power of our continued creation. We carry with us the wisdom and spirit of our collective ancestors and lands in this work. Learn more about 3 Realms Collective here.

Our partner for this mural, Oakland Peace Center, shares with us in this vision and has long acted as healing resource in the Oakland community. OPC provides needed space, events and trainings, and emotional and spiritual support for the collaborative network of artists, activists, cultural workers, educators, and nonprofits that partner in its mission to bring about a city of hope, justice, nonviolence and compassion. Their critical work in our home community of Oakland, is deeply connected to a larger movement working across our country and globe to build cultures and relations of peace. Learn more about Oakland Peace Center here.

Through our partnership with OPC, we will be working with an intergenerational group of youth, adults and elders to co-create the inaugural mural of the Sweet Medicine Mural Project. Community participants will be gathered from OPC's 30+ partnering organizations, including Seeds of Awareness, Urban Peace Movement, First Christian Church of Oakland and First Mongolian Christian Church, the African American Quilt Guild, and United Roots.

Community members will participate in a free Art as Medicine workshop series that integrates indigenous, cultural, spiritual, and contemplative practices with artistic process and creation. With our guidance, participants will explore their personal visions of healing justice, translate those visions into sacred imagery and collective prayer, and utilize their histories to incite radical and holistic change for their futures and the planet. In this way, our work moves beyond understandings and practices of art as intellectual work and technical skill development, to realize art as a path and tool of healing.

As keeper of our mural, OPC will host a community block party on October 30th, 2016 to celebrate the mural unveiling and to provide space for the sharing and exchange of healing resources across our communities. The event will bring together local residents, leaders, practitioners, artists, cultural workers, entrepreneurs, and organizations in the spirit of collective healing and peace building. There will be food, music, art, performances, activities, vendors, resource tables, and opportunities to receive treatment and consultation from practitioners of various healing traditions and modalities. In a blessing ceremony led by Liza Rankow of OneLife Institute, we will charge the mural with our communal blessings and prayers, to honor it as sacred ground and neighborhood refuge. Attendees will also have opportunity to share their own vision and prayer for healing justice at a "pop-up" Sweet Medicine Mural exhibit that will be temporarily installed at OPC.
Thanks to the support of Akonadi Foundation's Beloved Community Fund, we have already raised 50% of our project budget. We are halfway there, but we need your help. With your generous tax-deductible donation, we will be able to successfully provide:

- Stipends for community participants
- Stipends for speakers, healers, and performers at the community block party & mural blessing event
- Costs of workshop series, mural production, and painting supplies

We are aiming to raise the remaining funds we need by September 1st, 2016.

We thank you for considering the value any donation you have to offer provides us in this work. We hold faith that this healing project will be fully supported, and that we will be celebrating in gratitude and unity together on October 30th at the block party.

With love,
