She's my hero, my crusader, my inspiration, my only child, my daughter...Michelle. Why am I on "Go Fund Me"? Several months ago at the age of 37, Michelle was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer, one type in her breast and another type in her lymph nodes. The immediate intervention recommended was the standard protocol of western medicine: aggressive chemo, mastectomy and radiation.
My daughter has lived and worked in the world of holistic health for most of her adult years. Michelle has accepted the inevitable surgery but has chosen a holistic approach of alternative treatments instead of chemo. Already having a compromised immune system made the thought of introducing chemotherapy drugs into her system not an option. Michelle began alternative treatments in July. They include such things as IV oxygen and IV Vitamin C infusions twice weekly, as well as many supplements and a special diet. Unfortunately alternative treatments are not covered by insurance and with a monthly cost of at least $8,000 financial resources are quickly coming to an end.
We are not strangers to breast cancer. My sister, Sheryl and I were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001. We followed the recommended protocol. I survived. My beautiful sister did not. We saw her endure a year of very difficult chemo treatment and side effects.
Michelle is approaching this with optimism and her usual quiet, steadfast determination. My prayer is that she is able to continue her alternative treatments with positive results, proceed with surgery and reconstruction and continue living a healthful life, following her path of personal growth, truth, passion, appreciation and celebration of the human spirit.
