Last Saturday on June 9th, Susan Petersen Stillwell returned home to Corning, CA from work. She was looking forward to getting back to her four dogs, three cats and her little white house and spending Sunday with them.
She has lived there alone for the past 20 years after the sudden passing of her late husband Vic Stillwell. Susan, a single woman had a made a life for herself there with her gardens and animals. As she approached Corning, she saw a fire. The smoke was coming from her area and by the time she turned down the dirt road to home, she could see that her house, which sat on a little knoll, was gone. She pulled up and there were still flames coming from the remains of her home. If that was not bad enough all of her "fur babies" had been trapped inside. Only her coon dog Clover had managed to escape. This was devastating. People stood around and took pictures as Susan moved closer to see if anything had survived. It hadn't. Losing her animals and everything she owned was just too much for her. That night Susan had a heart attack and was rushed to the hospital.
She was released from the hospital Tuesday. Now she has the heavy task of getting through all of this while mourning the loss of her sweet pets and an entire life in that little home.
Susan did have insurance, but it was on the structure only, no insurance for personal belongings. She literally has only the clothes she went to work in that morning.
