Susan-my dearest friend- and her 13 yo son -Joshua found themselves in 8 inches of water on Saturday, August 28th, in their new home in Mont Belvieu, Texas. This little town is due East of Houston, just north of I-10. Their little town bore the brunt of the "dirty" side of the hurricaine. 24 hours of rain delivered upwards of 24 inches. The saturated land and over burdened streams and bayous could handle no more. They were evacuated along with their neighbors. They found themselves in a shelter. She has yet to get home. Her home is a new one-one that has been in the making for years. After a series of job changes and life/family events, Susan and Joshua have lived in 3 apartments in 3 years in 3 different towns. So this little home has been a blessing for them. It has brought them comfort, security and love. Now with the havoc and tragedy that has come with Hurricaine Harvey, it has been upturned once again. Perhaps you can imagine the turmoil for them both. Please consider helping them recover. They will need repair to their home, furnishings, bedding, clothes and vehicle.

I met Susan over 30 years ago during college. We became instant friends. We have weathered many things together-always in support of one another and our families. She is tried and true in my book. She is creative, articulate and can make a mean south Texas spicy anything if you give her some chilis and cumin! She is a God fearing woman and has instilled the virtues of love, kindness and compassion in her son Joshua.

Joshua is the sweetest boy I know- gentle, humble and funny are just a few of the many traits that would describe Joshua. Of course, he LOVES video games (what 13yo boy does not!) and can blast you with a large collection of puns he has written himself. Susan and Joshua are just like you and me.  Simple, hard-working, faithful people. Like us, they have had bumps in the road and recovered and kept on plugging (read: little engine that could). And now, in the wake of Harvey and this devastation,  they need a little push.

God bless each one of you who is reading this.

Last weekend, my family and I went to Mont Belvieu to help Susan and Joshua. I cannot even begin to describe the devastation. So many homes, so much ruin, so much trash. It was terrible. I am attaching some photos for you to see...you have seen all the news photos and videos. That is exactly what it is like. Unbelievable.

I have to say THANK YOU to all of you that have donated to Susan and Joshua. I am humbled by your generosity. Honestly , there are no words to describe the gratitude. So, I will leave it at that.

Susan and Joshua are beginning to piece it back to gather. They have a plan. It will be slow and expensive...and your giving is a true blessing. God Bless each and every one of you.

I have attached a letter from Susan...her words of thanks.

September 17, 2017

All,

It is Sunday evening. I have just now been able to take the time to stop long enough to attend to the GoFundMe campaign started by my dear friend Sarah Antenora. This is the first day since evacuating our home on August 27th, that I have not been up by 5:00 a.m. to head out to our home to work on reclaiming our lives.

Saying that this has been a difficult time, I'm certain, will not come as a shock to any of you. As I sit here, staring at my laptop screen, I am struggling to cobble together the words I need to adequately express my gratitude to each of you. Everything I type, then read, I ultimately delete because it sounds so insincere or so over-the-top that it can only be considered mawkishly hollow and melodramatic. (Granted, with regards to "melodramatic," not much of a stretch for me on a high-energy day, but I think you take my point.) Just the same, for someone who has progressed professionally in part due to her writing skills, I feel especially inept just now. Particularly regarding those of you who do not know me or my son, Joshua. You, exceptional strangers, on the recommendation of a "shared" request, reached out and blindly extended your hand to me and my child in an unqualified act of goodwill and compassion.

To all of you, both known and unknown, I apologize. Because I do not have the words to fully express how humbling your overwhelming generosity to me and my son has been. I am deeply humbled. And we are both so deeply grateful.

Pushing forward through the chaos that is now our lives is my responsibility and I welcome it -- because I am able enough, strong enough and capable enough to do it. Forward momentum is actionable. I am able to state this with confidence in large part because of each of you. You have each put a hand on my shoulder and, whether you realize it or not, have been with me through each ensuing mini-crisis since this nightmare began. The significance of your love, compassion, and generosity cannot be overstated -- particularly against the backdrop of living in an area where we as yet have not established a very robust support network.

I will be writing to each of you individually to thank you. But I could not let any more time pass without communicating -- as hackneyed as I know this will sound -- my profoundly deep gratitude and appreciation. Thank you, thank you and again, thank you.

With love,

Susan
