Surgical Care for Kids

Plasticos Foundation is dedicated to improving lives through reconstructive plastic surgery in the United States and worldwide.  By performing surgery free of charge for underserved individuals, primarily children, with traumatic injuries and correctable deformities, the volunteer medical teams save them from a life of profound suffering, isolation and possibly death. Additionally, to ensure that many more people receive care once the mission is complete, our surgeons train host-country doctors to perform complex reconstructive surgical procedures, to carry on the work.

Founded in 1999 by Dr. Larry Nichter, Plasticos Foundation strives to be an enduring philanthropic plastic surgical organization based on humanitarian goals and values. Establishing host-country medical alliances, to multiply impact, fulfilling the mission to provide reconstructive plastic surgical training and care to those in need, regardless of their ability to pay, and to advance the field of plastic surgery through education and research.

In addition to congenital disfigurements, acute burns are common in impoverished areas for a variety of reasons, most notably, kerosene burns resulting from efforts to cook or heat their shelters.  Tragically, in some areas, girls are intentionally set ablaze as punishment for inadequate dowries or other perceived inadequacies.  Through Plasticos Foundation’s life-changing surgery, these children can achieve a productive future and live their life to its greatest potential.

In 2016, Plasticos Foundation received requests from multiple countries to perform post-mastectomy breast reconstruction surgery on recovering cancer patients.  This type of surgery is not commonly performed in impoverished countries and as with congenital deformities and burns, the women are shut away and rejected by society, most often unable to work to support their family.

With multiple requests coming from doctors and hospitals in impoverished regions across the globe, the organization must prioritize based on urgency, number of patients in need of surgery, number of host-country doctors willing to receive training and available hospital beds.  The inability to fill every request is heart-wrenching for the volunteer surgeons and nurses who leave their jobs and families, sometimes at great sacrifice, to help children.   In 2016, volunteers performed reconstructive surgery on children with burn contractures and severe deformities in Cuba, Guatemala, Mexico and Vietnam and breast cancer patients in Cuba and Mexico.

Your donation of any amount would help fund a 2017 mission, which would allow Plasticos Foundation to send volunteer surgeons and nurses, secure medical equipment and supplies, identify host-country doctors to train and most importantly, to carefully screen and select patients in need of care.
