Oliver's Surgery

Donation protected
I was not a cat person until I met my buddy Oliver for the first time.

In December of 2015, Ollie was a stray kitten less than a month old wandering around our parking lot at work. My wife just had to bring home this little panther - and so our little family grew by one. We named him Oliver after Oliver Twist.

Ollie loves all the things that come with being a household cat - breakfasts and dinners on schedule, mouses that weren't real but could still be pounced on, and endless zoomies chasing the elusive red dot.

Needless to say, when Oliver first retreived his green mouse, galloped over to me with it hanging out of his mouth and proudly glared at me while he dropped it at my feet, I knew I had been blessed with a panther that would be my best friend.

Recently, our little Ollie turned three. He has been struggling to pee due to an accumulation of crystals forming and blocking his urethra. It started with him audibly and visibly straining inside of his litter, with nothing to show for his efforts.

We've rushed him to the animal hospital a couple times already, where he's had three catheters inserted to eliminate the obstruction so fluids can flow again. After the first he was himself again for six weeks, but the problem returned this week. With a third catheter inserted as I type this, his doctor has advised us that this is a repeated issue that can potentially only be solved via perineal urethrostomy - a procedure that removes the narrow part of his urethra and keeps the widest portion. It helps him pee a little easier with a much lower chance of blockage.

While my wife and I are fortunate to have health insurance, we do not have pet insurance. The estimate for the procedure, which will be performed at Bulger Animal Hospital in Massachusetts, is $5200. This includes the most recent catheter insertion, medication for pain and hydration, 48 hospitalization hours, fluids, medication, x-rays, and labs among other vet things.

He is scheduled to undergo surgery on Thursday, December 6. We would love to have a successful surgery and our little Oliver home and healthy.

Thank you and God bless!

Mike, Christine and Oliver
