Surgery for Karl Sanders

Karl is a 14 year old boy that was born with multiple eye problems. He suffers from Keratoconus which occurs when your cornea thins and gradually bulges outward into a cone shape. He also suffers from dry eye and his inner eyelids are described as “cobblestone”, which, when he blinks, causes scratches on his corneas. He is legally blind and his eyes fatigue easily, making school and homework often unbearable. All reading materials have to be enlarged to at least 20pt font. He has lived with daily pain since he was born. Often times, the pain becomes so severe that he is unable to do anything but put a cold cloth on his eyes and wait for his eyes to improve. This sometimes takes 3-4 days. Now that he is in high school, this is making his life especially hard, with the many hours of homework required each night.
Last year his family learned of a treatment in Boston called PROSE. BostonSight PROSE (prosthetic replacement of the ocular surface ecosystem) is a treatment pioneered by BostonSight that restores visual function, supports healing, reduces symptoms and improves quality of life for patients suffering with complex corneal disease. BostonSight PROSE treatment uses FDA approved (1994) custom designed and fabricated prosthetic devices to replace or support impaired ocular surface system functions. This finally gave them hope for their son. Sadly, last April, his dad, Calvin, lost his job of over 21 years as a senior graphic designer when the company decided to downsize. He has been unable to find employment even after graduating from an intense, 3 month robotics technician program. His mom, Beth, works many long hours but her employment offers no benefits at all. This past year has been difficult especially as they had to postpone this treatment for Karl.
