Surgery and/or treatment for Oso

Donation protected
As a critical care registered nurse, and student nurse anesthetist, I am use to helping others- not asking for help. As hard as it is for me to reach out, I am asking for help for my best friend and companion.

Oso is an 8 year old Belgian Malinois, and he is my best friend. He has been with me since high school graduation in 2009 through my undergrad degree, and now in grad school. On the afternoon of Sunday March 12, 2017 Oso went outside, and when he came in he was limping and unable to move his right hip.

I am currenly unable to work as a registered nurse while I complete the didactic courses and clinical hours required to graduate from CRNA school. I am in graduate school to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), and I work (unpaid) in the operating room 3 days a week, and I am in school 8 hours on Mondays and Tuesdays, leaving me unable to work. Money is extremely tight already for my husband and I, with the new changes to financial aid allowance for living expenses for graduate students. This change took place after the first of six semesters in my program, leaving us with less than half of just our mortgage payment alone, to live on. My husband is self employed, and his income is extremely variable. He has taken a second job to help with the shortcomings of the new financial aid change.

Oso was not complaining like he was in pain after he came inside, so I decided to keep a close eye on him and try to wait out the night to go to our regular vet on Monday morning. 2 hours later, Oso lost all movement in both of his back legs. I rushed him to the emergency vet where I was told he had a slipped disk that was pressing on his spinal cord. Surgery would be $3-5,000 and the only vet that can perform the surgery is 3 hours away in Manhattan, Kansas.

If I can not get the funds for the surgery within 48 hours, chances of recovery are very slim. The other option we have is to provide anti-inflammatory, pain, and steroidal medication to reduce the amount of pressure on his spinal cord. He will also need accupuncture, laser therapy, and rehab. We will need to purchace a special sling to hold up his back legs/hips to take him outside to potty. Hopefully, this treatment will regain some movement in either or both of his legs. If not, and we can keep his pain minimal, we will need to purchase a wheel chair so that Oso can walk free of the sling.

Oso is not just a dog, he is my best friend. He has been there with me through thick and thin. Oso would never give up on me, and I want to give him the best chance at having the rest of a great life. As long as Oso is not suffering, I want to do everything I can to help him have as much movement and recovery as possible. Any amount will help us to either pay for the surgery or pay for the medications an equipment we need to cope with the new life that is ahead of us.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.
