Help us take our podcast to South Africa this July!

We are The Reproductive Justice Happy Hour Podcast (www.rjhappyhour.com), your new favorite podcast in town!

RJ Happy Hour is co-produced and co-hosted by Surabhi Srivastava and Kristin Francoeur. It is an “India-centric, transnationally-savvy” platform dedicated to discussing intersectional feminist issues within a Reproductive Justice (RJ) framework.

Like to know more about RJ? Click here! http://sistersong.net/reproductive-justice/

Our goal through this podcast is to:
1. Explore podcasting as a medium for advocacy and activism

2. Combat abortion stigma by normalizing discussions on abortion, sexuality, and feminism

3. Provide a platform for other activists/feminists/artists to share about their work!

We are still a baby podcast, but since our launch at the end of 2017 we’ve accomplished a lot!

We launched the podcast in November 2017. In the six months we have:

1. Our fabulous website up and running, along with the Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/rjhappyhour/

2. A dedicated SoundCloud channel for episodes (https://soundcloud.com/rjhappyhour)

3. Published 8 episodes so far, with two in the editing queue!

4. A global listenership! (We have listeners in India, U.S., U.K., Bangladesh, Egypt, Ireland, and more!)

And now, we have an opportunity to take the podcast to South Africa!

We’ve been invited to do a live recording at the Abortion and Reproductive Justice: Unfinished Revolution III conference at Rhodes University this July! Pretty cool, right?

You can find out more about the conference here: http://www.repjusticeconference3.co.za/about/about-the-conference

This is a super exciting and truly invaluable opportunity for us to promote the podcast with an interested audience from across the globe. There won’t be another conference like this until 2020, so this is our shot! But we can only knock ‘em dead with our signature moxie if you support our journey.

Why should you lend your ears – and coin – to our podcast?

You should invest in us because we are exactly what India - and feminist movement - needs right now!

That is, two opinionated women spearheading an initiative about which we are passionate, speaking up on issues of gender, sexuality, politics, etc. and claiming space to advance a different narrative from the mainstream.

We provide a combination of experiences, expertise, and vision that is rarely seen in one collaboration – not to mention our close friendship and deep trust, which allows us to probe sensitive topics like caste and race with respect and even humor!

We also see the podcast as an enabling space for other women and people from marginalized communities to share their own stories and experiences in their own voices.

Why do we want to attend this conference?

The timing of this conference is crucial. Conducting a live recording and promoting the podcast with such a large number of interested attendees would provide an invaluable opportunity for expanding our reach and building an audience. As noted, we have had excellent response from listeners in our short time on the air, but we are at a critical stage where we need to grow our audience in order for this work to be sustainable.

Because we focus on Indian contexts and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) activism in our podcast, bringing this awareness to an important transnational forum such as the Unfinished Revolution conference would significantly raise the profile of Indian advocacy in this space.

Your support would not just be limited to the exposure the conference space itself provides, therefore, but would translate into sustained engagement with the sorts of audiences we can attract and continue to grow based on the networks we build from this opportunity.

Where will your contributions go?

We’re not in it for the money, but we can’t do this work without it!

The RJ Happy Hour runs on our passion for the work - plus tons of coffee! Every cent we’ve received in sponsorship has been invested directly in the podcast. Your contributions will go toward:

1. Registration for the conference ($500)

2. Travel to the conference ($2750)

3. Accommodation ($500)

We are an independently run podcast, with no corporate sponsors or other current sources of funding, hence our journey to take the podcast to South Africa can only be made possible with your generous support.

Thank you so much for considering donating and sharing to support  our journey! Please share on your socials, and with your most gossipy aunties - we want this baby to go viral ;).
