Support for Foster Kiddo!

Donation protected
Most of you know that I am a social worker at a rural social services agency in Western North Carolina. Issues related to substance abuse, neglect, and abuse have led many children into our custody and care. Our teenagers are especially in need of financial resources and life experiences to prepare them for transitioning from foster care into young adulthood.  Due to the mental and physical health issues that often arise as a result from abuse, neglect, and displacement, foster children can often be more vulnerable to engage in high risk behaviors and experience further trauma.  Fostering Success in Education reports that 2-9% of former foster children obtain a bachelor's degree (2014). Along with my coworkers, we would like to challenge this statistic, even if it means working with one kiddo at a time.

One such teenager, who shall remain nameless to protect her identity, has overcome tremendous hardships and trauma in her very young life. Despite this, she is incredibly resilient. Given her excellent academic record, her hardwork ethic, and clean disciplinary record, she has the opportunity to participate in an exchange program between her high school and the Duborg Skolen School of Flensborg, Germany.

This could be the trip of a lifetime for this young lady and as her social worker, I hope that we as a community can support her financially so that she may gain the experience of traveling to another country and acquire the life skills that come with travelling abroad. After high school, she plans to pursue the medical field at a public, North Carolina Univeristy and her ultimate goal is to able to support her family. I believe traveling will give her the strength and independence she will need to pursue her goals. This particular kiddo would love to have a job and raise the funds herself, but between taking chemistry, preparing for the SAT, and training to be a CNA, we would rather she concentrate on academics and allow us to help with fundraising.

If you are able to contribute $1, $5, or $50, we would be incredibly grateful for any amount that can go towards supporting this special kiddo. The total amount would cover flight costs, passport, insurance, transportation, and entry into all attractions while abroad. She will have the opportunity to travel to several locations in Germany, as well as Denmark.

Thank you for your time and consideration regarding this awesome kiddo! If you would like more information, feel free to contact me at [email redacted]. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
