Who We Are:
Machine Mavericks is Kingston, Ontario, Canada’s newest FIRST Robotics team. Started in September, 2018, we pride ourselves on being the creation of two female students and we actively strive for gender parity in STEM fields. Machine Mavericks believes that young women and men learning to work together is of great value to the 21st-century workplace. We are also the only team in Kingston with an in-house machine shop which allows students hands-on training and experience in an industrial setting. This-second year community team is made up of students from four different public and private high schools: Holy Cross Secondary, Regiopolis-Notre Dame, KCVI, and Leahurst College.  Our team has done STEM community outreach presentations of our robot and team at 5 schools, 3 community organizations, 5 community events, been on TV and radio and featured in the newspaper.

What the FIRST Robotics Competition is about:
The Machine Mavericks use the fall season to learn machining, software development, Computer Aided Drawing, safety protocols, team organization and non-profit business development.  The team prepares for a grueling six week build season beginning the first week of January where they put their newly learned STEM skills to the ultimate test: building a 120lb robot that works! March - April teams compete regionally, provincially and, if they make it, globally.

What It Costs:
It takes substantial resources to give students hands-on, real world experience with STEM, run a robotics team, buy robot parts,  and register for competitions. However, we believe that the resources invested in fostering STEM projects and awareness will immensely benefit our community and our nation.

A basic robot costs about $7,000 to build. Here are just a few sample costs that we have:
$3,075        FRC Basic Startup Kit
$224            CIM Motor
$1,300        Swerve and Steer Module
$435            Robot Controller
$390            Vertical Build Kit
$259            Intake System Kit

Here are a few sample costs for competitions:
$3,500       Regional Competition Registration
$3,500       Provincial Competition Registration
$6,500       World Championship Registration

Making Kingston Proud!
We are also very proud to be part of Kingston, Ontario's growing STEM success! All three of Kingston's FIRST robotics high school level teams (WAFFLES , Lake Effect , and Machine Mavericks) qualified for World Championships in 2019.  Meanwhile, Queen's University Faculty of Engineering  leads Canada in the number of female enrollment (28%).  Thank you Kingston for investing in the future!

A very warm thank you for donations of any size to make our season possible! Please share the word if you can!
