Supporting Lyungai and family through Leukemia

Our friend Lyungai Mbilinyi visited her family doctor late morning on November 1st 2018, to follow-up on recent symptoms of what she thought was the flu. Within that hour, she was admitted to the ER where doctors diagnosed her with the beginning stages of heart failure due to an aggressive form of Leukemia. That very night, Lyungai was taken by ambulance to another hospital where a team of doctors, oncologists and clinical researchers performed multiple procedures through a new investigational chemotherapy to save her life.
After successfully completing the initial two phases of treatment for Acute Myeloid Leukemia – that included two separate hospital stays over 52 days, Lyungai is back at the hospital for another month or more. She is fighting for her life again and the only way to survive will be through a Bone Marrow Transplant.
Lyungai has been on unpaid medical leave since November 1st, 2018 – and based on her prognosis, most likely for the rest of 2019. Her husband who is also Lyu’s primary caregiver, will take three months of Leave to provide the required around the clock care for Lyu post-transplant, while coordinating care of their young children.
