Caren's Story

Our dear friend Caren Meyer has faced a series of health crises in the past  two and a half years.  Her health problems began with what seemed to be a routine infection which in reality was an abscess in her abdomen.   Many hospital stays later, she learned she had colon cancer.  Caren faced these health issues  with tremendous faith and hope.   Her devotion to Mary the Blessed Mother and Padre Pio has brought her great comfort.  Caren’s challenges included living with a colostomy, chemotherapy treatments, many skin wounds and  spread of her colon cancer to the liver.

It has been six months since she walked into St. Joseph’s for colostomy reversal surgery that should have allowed her to get her life back to normal.  However, one week after the surgery Caren continued to feel unwell.   A 911 call in the middle of the night returned her the hospital and emergency surgery for a ruptured colon.   She developed sepsis and respiratory failure living on life support in St. Joseph’s ICU.  When her health continued to decline and renal failure set in, she was transferred to LIJ to the Surgical ICU.    Battling sepsis and wound healing setbacks, Caren developed clots in her lungs that required continued ventilator therapy.   A tracheotomy was eventually performed to improve her quality of life as she recovered.   As the weeks passed, Caren was able to breath on her own and began physical therapy eventually leaving the hospital for continued rehab.  Her short stay in rehab was unsuccessful, as she developed renal failure and wound infections and returned to LIJ where treatment planning for her wounds, infections, physical and emotional health ultimately led to transfer to Calvary Hospital in The Bronx for treatment by their state of the art wound care teams.

As you can imagine, the expenses have been overwhelming; uncovered medical bills, co-pays, meals on the run, gas and parking amounts to incredible daily unplanned financial outlays.  Today, we are asking for our community, far and wide to support Caren and her family.   Caren and Ralph are life-long Seaford residents and parishioners of St. William the Abbot Church. Caren was a member of the Home School Association at St. William’s School for many years and helped with countless fundraisers and school events. Caren founded the Youth Ministry program at St. William’s and she and Ralph ran the high school religious ed program as well.  They have touched the lives of countless youth through Seaford Schools, CYO, SWS, SWA, and St. John the Baptist High School, where their daughter Emily will enter her senior year this fall.  Caren is a graduate of St. William the Abbot School, St. John the Baptist High School and St. John’s University.
